How can you be shocked by the cost of living, unless you're a complete ****ing mong who doesn't bother learning anything about the country you're moving to? <doh>

And "no Robinson's Fruit Juice" - <laugh> Damn those former colonies, not selling our overpriced sugary piss!

Why would anyone agree to go in a national paper, just to show how ****ing dim they were?

Erm....I think I might have answered my own question there.

That's one of the better bits of 'dreary' Hull, albeit on a **** day.

Plenty of reference to Durham and the North East though- hence my question.

I was in a pub in Hornsea during winter a many years ago and a guy was telling another guy a similar story .He and his wife moved to Australia and after 2 weeks booked their passage home .He left the sunshine to become a milkman in the Hornsea area (in Winter) and was so distraut he was planning to return to Australia as soon as he could afford it.
    Another case
An Irish lad landed in Sydney got temporary free migrant accommodation in a Hostel, went to the nearest Pub that evening discovered that you couldn't get Guiness on draught only bottled, and went and booked a Flight back the next day.

Thankfully I do not know them.If they had any gumption they would have contacted the juice supplier and offered to be their Aussie agent.

Considering that their total budget for the move was £10k and they planned to spend £4k on flying out their dog, I think research was the least of their problems.

They should have used all their money buying a brain.

I've known plenty of people moving to Australia from the UK and they've never mentioned the cost of living. With all that land the property shouldn't be too expensive and I would have thought people would spend more of their time on outdoor pursuits that were cheap and not going to expensive indoor places so much.

The original post is almost beyond words. Not enough research was done and when he contacted Australia House with a view to moving to Australia he could have received any amount of help as regards cost of living and employment opportunities. Some of the prices he quoted are ridiculous as most supermarkets have their own brands of bread (under 70p per loaf) and milk (under 70p a litre) and beer isn't bought as individual bottles/stubbies/cans it is bought in "Slabs" of 24 or 30 which is much less than that quoted. We're talking REAL beer here by the way. You can pay bigger prices for your shopping but that depends on your individual taste but the secret to all this is to snap up the bargains when they become available and reduce your shopping bill by up to half.
I was an original 10 quid "Pom" but when I came here there were ten jobs to every person - the employment pages were half an inch thick - but now it's ten people for every job. The "Land of Milk and Honey" is well and truly gone folks and, unless you have a secure job lined up and a substantial amount of money to lay the foundations for your house/car/furniture etc, then you had better think again. I and my family (wife and three kids at the time) had to live in a nissen hut with communal toilet/bathroom and eating facilities for two years whilst we established a bank account that qualified for a housing loan. (I arrived here with a mere 150 quid). At that time, others came here merely to raise enough money to return to England as 'comparatively' rich (they hardly left the hostel) and used the migration system as a 'means to an end'.
No, if Australia want workers they bring them in on 'temporary visa's' and then piss them off when they've finished.
Beware anyone contemplating moving here and do your research especially the area you are contemplating moving to.

They should have gone to New Zealand instead. Far better than Oz imo.
