I've still got no problems with Trott. The sheer volume of runs that he scores gets him in my side. The issue, and it's a massive issue, is the make-up of that top three.

Granted, part of that issue is because of Trott. If Bell and Cook blasted runs all over the shop, then Trott's run rate would be of no issue. But they don't, and so it is. But unlike those two, you can almost guarentee 40+ runs from Trott every game. So sorry Bell and Cook, but until either you're that consistent or you start scoring at an almost Gayle-like pace, then one of you two (if not both of them) must make way. Trott stays.

I felt we had posted about enough runs bearing in mind our bowling talent, but just couldn't get that breakthrough. I think (despite the recent series defeat) we will be good enough to beat NZ.

I mean that a run a ball as the ceiling for your top 3 isn't good enough these days. Sanga is capable of smashing it all over the place but he didn't need to today because the run rate required for the whole innings was only a run a ball anyway and the gamble of sending Kulasekara in early paid off. The thing is, guys like Sanga, Dilshan and Jayawardene can score 60 off 90 balls then hit out and reach 100 off 110 or 120. Our top order haven't yet shown they can do that which is one reason why England are a good ODI team when par is around 270 or less, but when we need to push on and score well over 300 we usually can't do it. Cook's game has developed and he may get there eventually, I'm not convinced Trott will ever be able to but there's no denying he scores runs and there's certainly a place for an anchor man in the team. I'd probably drop Bell for KP (whose best ODI innings have been when he's started relatively calmly and then exploded) and either open with him or Root.

Flexibility is a good point and England definitely lack it. Look at Sri Lanka today, they promoted Kulasekara and it came off. England would never have promoted Swann or Broad up the order to have a swing.

Spent loads of time there, right on the edge of the Peak District which is probably my favourite place in England. Sheffield gets a bad rep from some, it's obviously got some rough areas, but so have all big cities.

Well obviously I'm going to click it. [/Archer voice]

Is that from Pokemon? It looks like the same leek that Farfetch'd carries.

I know a girl who goes to uni up there. Quite fancy her actually. If you meet her, kindly let her know what she's missing.
