I don't know of any of our players who lived south of the river, other than Dawson and that was only because he was previously at Scunny.
Someone on the HDM site claims 5 of our 'regular starting 11' live in Leeds - any truth in that? Only player I know that does is Aaron McLean, and that's only because he wants to portrait that he lives his life like Lil Wayne. If I was going to guess I'd say Quinn, Brady, Meyler & Aluko - but the HDM comment was probably a load of made up guff.
But they all lead normal, quiet lives - they're not footballers wanting wags and a party lifestyle. I've seen Hull discussed as it's residents being "reluctant urbanites" i.e. We have the luxury of being surrounded by glorious countryside, and that's what locals aspire to have the lifestyle of - probably hence why there are a distinct lack of modern apartment blocks in Hull city centre in comparison to other city centres in the UK (which bring with it added central spending and people about to create more of an evening/night-time economy - which means more money spent in restaurants/bars, so more/better quality ones open too). Where-as for example, I was in Sheffield this morning - looked out of the window and saw a row of modern apartment blocks that will have cost millions to build and cost a fair bob to buy, yet many of the windows looked out onto the side of a flyover!!! You wouldn't get people interested in buying an apartment in Hull with a view of the side of a flyover, they'd say "sod it, I can buy a 2 bedroom semi with country views for he same price, cya!"
I'm pretty sure Quinn still lives in the Sheffield area. A couple used to live in South Cave (Cullen, Emerton and Devitt did) as I think the club have a couple of houses in the gated community at the East end of the village.
Part 2 of Hull being the home of "reluctant urbanites" (see above): We know the Allams have taken an interest in residential developments in the past, perhaps for this 'players must live locally' plan to work, the Allams need to invest (along with their probable 'friends in high places' in the construction industry') to give the players what they want and build a luxury residential block beside the Humber? or where The Boom was meant to be built? or beside the Marina? The Nick Proschwitz German interview had me interested with what the Swansea keeper (Tremmel) had said regarding Swansea-living. He mentioned an apartment looking out to the 'sea' and can see for miles around (or something to that extent), so assumed he must live here: please log in to view this image please log in to view this image If you look on Google maps - it's like Victoria dock bar 4 or 5 apartment blocks, plus one tall tower .......I am getting to the reluctant urbanite bit. Anyway, the developer iSpace put in a planning application to build this at Hull Marina gateway back in 2010: please log in to view this image Numerous 'elderly residents' in the nearby Henry Vernone Court moaned and complained to the council and (rumoured to have) got the scheme binned by writing/complaining/moaning to the government agency responsible for the funding iSpace needed to get this development passed planning stage. The 'elderly residents' complained that the marina 'should be preserved as it is' and that this development was 'out of character with the area', 'would block out their light and the views from the marina out onto the Humber' (reluctant urbanite-ism?). If you don't know Henry Vernone Court, it's these here: https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=hu...jgulkZ7HzyAWuZK8_rlHXw&cbp=12,112.74,,0,-4.87 Perhaps someone should point out to the elderly residents who complained that their home is the worst looking building on the marina! We should knock it down and send them to Sheffield where they can moan about a flyover going passed their window.
Old people piss me off sometimes. Something like 85% of the world's healthcare budget is spent keeping people in the last 5% of their lives alive. They insist we have it easy these days when our education system is ****e, the world is trillions of dollars in debt and no ****er can get a job, despite extensive (and expensive) university education. Remind me again why life in the 50's when you just had to say you had a degree and you'd be a CEO was so much harder? And as soon as something that looks remotely like progress comes along, they kick up a stink by saying that it's ruining the view. Well **** off up the Yorkshire Dales then!
Mclean is the only one I know was definitely living in Leeds, though I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the others were there too(I believe Brady was living at Chester's).
I don't know if this is a good idea or not. Can't see Hull being an attractive option. Hope we can attract players then.
I believe Macca used to live in Leeds but last season was living at Chester's too. I don't see anything wrong with them being in Yorkshire. If Quinn does still live in Sheffield area it would be pretty harsh insisting on him moving for the sake of an hours drive. In an ideal world players would move into the City they play for, but our City doesn't really offer them anything accommodation wise at the minute so I have no issue with players live on the outskirts of Hull and the wider Yorkshire region (within reason, perhaps a 1.5 hour drive from training max.) Maybe the Allams should develop some luxury apartments and offer them to players as a part of their contracts? I'd like to think that if the Allams plan works we'd see a bit more commitment, loyalty and pride on and off the pitch, morale and dressing room would be good too. the players would be playing for 'their' City (albiet only where they are currently living). PS. I think Fryatt is off. (Derby is my guess).
Assem doesn't say they have to live in Hull, just anywhere with an HU postcode, which includes all the villages west of Hull, along with Beverley and all the east coast. We normally put players in apartments at Anlaby House until they sort their own place, though the club do have some other properties in Ferriby and Swanland.
Don't think he was setting definite limits (ie HU post code), more a "basis" of a principal. There is a problem (as Ehab says) with a 3 hour commute, but I doubt if they would kick off if someone lived in Barton or DN14 for example. Though they might question the sanity of anyone who chose to live in Goole!
Perhaps it's because older people have funded the NHS for 40 odd years? I find young people to be a drain on the NHS. Ever spent any time in A&E on a Fri, Sat, Sun night? Full of youngsters unable to take their ale, drugs etc and creating violent mayhem for blameless nurses and staff. And don't get me started on the litter! Bah!
See my last post: The problem in Hull isn't just 'reluctant urbanite-ism' it's that the spaces we have that offer open views aren't used for residential use (bar a few apartments on Victoria Dock and Freedom Quay on the marina). Look left as you leave Hull down the A63 - it's all commercial and industrial use! Land that could all have been long stretches of high-spec apartments offering views out onto the Humber is instead things that could have been built anywhere in the city, for example the likes of Motor Depot's big tin shed and the Land Rover garage (both of which look inwards, away from the water! So what is the point in having such a location?!! - they could be anywhere), the land next to Motor Depot where Hessle Haven meets the Humber is a muddy wasteland that was used to store containers on! ...and to a lesser extent; St.Andrew's Quay - as it could have been built anywhere in the city.
Players who move to the area usually have positive views about the area and the more that move here the more positivity will spread among agents and potential signings in future. The bad views about the area always seem to come from those who have never visited and spent time getting to know what there is.
See the press now linking living locally with the Maynor Figueroa transfer. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/hull-target-maynor-figueroa-told-1946132?
I don't see this as a major problem, these guys who are getting EPL salaries can afford to have a gaff in the Hull area to meet this condition, and live there during the week, as well as keep a place in the preferred location.
Do any PL players live in Salford or Trafford for that matter - do any white ****e players live within the city boundary? - even say well to do Adel or Alwoodley - I guess the answer to all of that is no. They'll all live in leafy Cheshire or the Harrogate area respectively. Whilst on the subject please don't get be going on the artificially tight city boundaries that excludes all our wealthy suburbs unlike any other comparable city in the country. The East Riding is a fantastic county - far better than Kent for example that I visit regularly and that was once the 'Garden of England'. Wasn't this also said by that posh bird that runs Beverley Racecourse? The Club is merely expecting some commitment from players - doubt with PL players though that they'll be wanting to be dictated to about where they should or shouldn't live.
The land that is St Andrews Quay was owned by the Estate arm of ABP as I recall. Once Clive Sully was built it opened up their land for development - unfortunately there was no city centre living probably anywhere in the country in the mid 80's and unfortunately it got developed for retail. It sure beat what was there before though - Hull Fish Meal Company with rotting stinking fish and the derelict Fish Docks. The route that replaced the fairly well manicured A63 Boothferry Road into Hull was very grim to start with. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.
