Is football merely a game?

Below are the comments of an Arsenal supporter:

First of all, do you agree with his comments?

The Gunners have undoubtedly been entertaining this season and had, at one point, threatened to carry all before them. However, for the third year running Arsene Wenger and his young guns have ended the season without a trophy.

Five Live phone-ins would suggest Arsenal fans seem happy with watching the “art and poetry” on display every weekend. Your attitude also suggests you regard trophies as a bonus.

But, watching your team play with flair cannot ever compensate for missing out on silverware. After all, if football is not about the winning then why would you keep the score?

David Ginola, a member of the Newcastle side dubbed “the entertainers”, believes winning is all important.

Why can't we play beautiful football and win trophies? Barca do.

Arsenal - the only team to beat both Barca and Utd this season <ok>

As for trophies, Arsenal aren't simply trying to play beautiful football for it's own sake.

But Barca play beautiful football in order to win games. They keep the ball and pass it around to tire the opponents out so when they don't have possession and start pressing it is easier for them to win it back. When Barca are playing their passing game they are always looking to carve the opponent open, get the ball into dangerous areas and create a direct scoring chance. Too often it seems that when Arsenal are playing their passing game they are just looking to keep the ball for the sake of it, without much idea of what their possession is building towards.

Arsenal are trying to carve open an chance with their possession in the same way that Barca do, it's just that we're not as good at it <laugh>

I think that winning is the object of the game for players, and they should do whatever is necessary to achieve that aim. However football is about more than just winning, why would anyone support clubs in the conference if that was true? Loyalties to your area come in to it however we all like to watch football matches to see a bit of magic, it could be a brilliant passing manoeuvre that leads to nothing, it could be a Cruyff turn that leaves another player on their backside, either way it may stick in your mind longer than the actual result of the match. This would not be the case if football was only about winning, sometimes for a person it is more important to see a player do something they did not expect to see than the 3 points they get in a game. Thats why I will never regard our football as meaningless, although I accept that it is not good enough to keep me satisfied.
