According to a couple of papers, including today's Guardian, Chris Powell is a contender for the Wigan job. Now personally I can't see The Doctor at Wigan at all, but I can see why you get these rumours. And if we have a good start to the season, then come October and November when trigger-happy chairman start to panic and issue P45's, there will be more of these rumours. So let's get CP on a new contract, eh?

Happily give him a new contract, tie him down to a 5 year deal so if a bigger club wants him they pace us a fortune and it will be the best signing we will make all summer. And I would have no worries with a 5 year deal, Powell is the man to take us forward whether we have a shoddy season or a great one :) IN POWELL WE TRUST! :D

Can but agree. If any club recognises that you have to give managers time to develop, build, learn and grow it is us. We also recognise when to ship out shoddy managers. Powell is a great manager continuing to learn his craft with us but will be a greater manager given time. However, we all like to have job security and this is something that is missing n the modern game. Sign him up on a long term contract now.

Does anybody know of a rational explanation why we'd put ourselves in this position?

The logical move would have been to extend his contract almost immediately the season ended - this is almost making him a sitting duck to be picked off by anyone with more money than us.

    Don't get it.

It's not just someone with more money. It's someone who will also give him an extended contract, especially if he still hasn't got a new contract by October, which is when clubs start sacking managers who have a bad run.

Sorry FHB, I should have made myself clearer - I didn't mean he'd leave for more money, just that another club with more money at its disposal would make him a longer term and more secure offer. <ok>

Nothing to worry about folks, Karl Robinson is on the shortlist. There's no way any club would choose Powell over Robinson. Karl Robinson is probably the best football manager outside of the Champions League - I'm sure I've read comments from Karl Robinson saying the same.

Surprised Michael Appleton isn't on the list.

    Nice one. <ok>

Yes, seems to me Appleton would be a good fit.

I don't think there is any chance of Powell going to Wigan, and very little chance of him going anywhere else before next summer at the very earliest. Only possible place would be Leicester and I think they would want someone with more experience if Pearson fails to deliver (although they are my favorites for promotion with him in charge).

However, if CP shocked us and did go to another club in the near future it would mean one of two things:

    (1) He is not the Messiah many here consider him to be, whose identification with, and loyalty to, the club transcends his inexperience and occasional fumbles as a manager. (To such an extent that many would cheerfully stick with him even if we get relegated.) We were just a rung on the ladder for him. In which case, no great loss.

or (2) There is something so seriously wrong within the club (finances, dissension, malpractice, worthless promises, or whatever) that he feels driven out, much as he would love to stay. In which case we would have more fundamental problems to worry about than who is team manager.

Hopefully neither of the above situations apply.

So if he leaves at any stage in the future, either Powell never cared about the club or the club is in massive trouble (financially, mismanagement whatever). Glad that one's sorted.

    I'm with FHB.

At the moment I'm only slightly uneasy about this, but if he has still not signed a contract extension by the time we play Welling, I will ratchet the anxiety up a notch.

That would be my diagnosis if he made a sideways move (like to Wigan) in the near future. But in the longer run, of course he is entitled to further his career once he has proved that he needs a bigger stage than Charlton. Ideally that day will be deferred by he and the club growing and improving in tandem.

I don't know what happened the other day, but all the leading bookmakers dramatically shortened their odds on Powell moving to Wigan. There was a rumour on the Dr Kish site that lack of transfer fees and a cap on wages preventing loan players may yet push CP out of the door. As usual, I'm in the dark about what's happening, but this rumour appears to have more legs tan we bargained on, and I'll be happy to see Wigan with any other new manager now, ASAP, as this seems like a worry.

Someone walked into a William Hill's in Leeds and asked to put £100 on Powell for Wigan.

After a bit of to and fro, he was finally allowed to put £20 on it and WH cut their odds accordingly. Every other bookies followed suit when it flagged up on Oddschecker

How many people were odds on for the Charlton job when Parky was sacked? I think it was about 6 different people. By comparison, Powell was still out at 4s or 5s

The odds on him going to Wigan have lengthened, and I can't really see it myself. I do expect CP to start next season with us, but if he isn't given a new contract he will be tempted by offers once the sacking season begins, I'd guess about October.

Maybe he is our most sellable asset after Solly? Should the worst happen, I'm sure our board would hold out for over a million. Not that I'm suggesting I'd by any means want this to happen, but it could be their thought?
