http://www.sunderlandecho.com/sport/sunderland-afc/mignolet-to-reject-sunderland-deal-1-5741337 SIMON MIGNOLET is unlikely to pen a new contract at Sunderland, according to the goalkeeperâs agent. Sunderland have been in talks since March over extending Mignoletâs deal at the Stadium of Light, in a bid to tie down the clubâs prize asset, who still has another two years left to run on his Black Cats contract. But those discussions have now stalled and Sunderland are potentially facing a huge dilemma after Mignoletâs representative, ex-Birmingham City keeper Nico Vaesen, said that he doesnât expect the Belgian to extend his stay at the club beyond 2015. Mignolet has always professed his happiness at Sunderland and will make no attempt to orchestrate a move away from the Black Cats, while boss Paolo Di Canio has publicly stressed his determination for the keeper to remain in red and white. The 24-year-old was also quick to rubbish talk in February that he was looking to join a bigger club to boost his international chances after comments from ex-Belgium international Guy Vandersmissen, who works for the same agency as Vaesen. But Vaesen has always been Mignoletâs main representative and his comments will only fuel speculation surrounding the ex-St Truiden manâs future, with Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal and Napoli all circling. When asked on the status of the contract talks, Vaesen told the Echo: âThere is no progress. âI think it is very unlikely that he will sign a new contract. âSimon has obviously come to a point where he wants to step up a level and there is a lot of interest in him. âHe is very ambitious and wants to play in the World Cup, in Brazil, next year. âIt was a good thing that Sunderland stayed up and it is a fantastic club where he has had three great years. âBut it is maybe time to step up a level and play for a club competing for a European spot.â Sunderland remain in a strong position regarding Mignolet and will still hope to keep last seasonâs outstanding performer on Wearside. But without a new contract on the table, it increases the likelihood of Sunderland being forced to cash in on Mignolet either this summer or in 12 months time. The Black Cats would be able to command a huge fee â certainly far in excess of the meagre £6.5million figure mooted over the weekend â for Mignolet and have a ready-made replacement on their books in Keiren Westwood. Neither is their any move from Mignoletâs camp to fast-track a switch to a club able to boast European football. Vaesen added: âAll teams that are interested in Simon, we direct them to Sunderland. âHe still has a two-year contract there and any interested clubs have to agree a price with Sunderland first. âThat is the way we conduct our business.â --------------------------------------------------------- I love it - "That is the way we conduct our business" yet you are publicly telling a newspaper, which is available via the internet nationally and monitored by the big clubs no doubt, that he's not going to sign a deal. ****ing scumbag arseholes who, IMO, are a big part of the reasoning behind the game being killed by money (if not the biggest part!) Personally -I think the club should sit down with him and ask him to sign a new 3 or 4 year deal but say we don't mind selling him next summer - with 2 or 3 years left on his contract we don't get shafted and we get maximum return - if he won't sign then, IMO, we have to sell him this summer to get a decent return on him
If he does go why are we only interested in the money? Imo if he goes to any team we can cash in better for a player + cash. Liverpool - We could take a decent winger ( downing? Sterling? ) + 5 million. Arsenal - Take that young right back they have or the left back as they rarely get their games but look good. Man U - Some player that was a has be would come? I do think Mig wants to leave and is just being very polite. For me I would be sad to loose him but very happy for him and also Westwood. If he goes ( Which I think he may sooner than we think ) We should be looking at other teams players not just the money. Some Proven players in the EPL. Not these "Gamble" players.
Oh well gutted to see the lad go, but I'd get rid now whe we still stand a chance of keeping Westwood and we can get the massive fee we deserve for him!
Think the Westwood comment is a very good one - I feel very sorry for him as he was playing very well when he took ill and Mignolet stepped in and the rest, as they say, is history! I don;t think he'll go to Man U as he will end up playing second fiddle to De Gea - I personally think he's a better keeper but they have invested an awful lot of time and effort into De Gea who has turned into a much better keeper in the latter part of the season. Liverpool possibly - think Sterling will stay there but Downing may be an option. At the end of the day we have to look after SAFC and I'm pretty sure Ellis is doing that and will look for the best avenue - I thiink selling him now would benefit all parties if he won't sign another deal - you can knock at least £5m off hi price tag if he only has 1 year left on his contract
As has been said on here by multiple peeople, many times, we should have looked to tie him to a better contract before now. Bad mistake by the club not doing this. I would probably sell him this summer to get maximum value from him.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU! I love the Mig. Would be gutted to see that sexy Belgian chocolate go
The strange thing is he's flushing the rest of his development down the toilet. He's going to be nowhere near as busy at these clubs (don't think he'll go to liverpool, if he does it's an insult to us.) I'll take 15m+ for him, wish him the best and watch him never fulfill his potential. Silly boy. Players need to wake and realise agents don't care about their clients future, they just want as higher % as quickly as possible and to hell with what's best for their clients. Unlucky Mig, you could have been the best.
The Mig is a clever lad and has always stated he will move on. He had a good season and it's only right he considers his options as a player if teams are interested. He employs his agent to get the best for him (and this also incluceds money). The agent is only doing his job. It seems some of us don't actually understand football. I would cash in and give Westwood the chance he's always wanted. In todays market I would say he is worth 15/18 million based on skill levels, game time in the permier and age. I wish him good luck!
I think it would be madness to lose him - if we keep him (even until his current contract expires and he goes on a Bosman). He saved/earnt us so many points this season that, in one respect, he kept us up - what is that worth in terms of cash, easily the same amount as he would be sold for...if (hope over expectation) we are pressing ahead at the end of next season then we might sign him onto a longer contract more easily. I love Mig and would hate to see him leave - he is better than Westwood (who whilst good is largely unproven for us given Mig`s form) and his value needs to be considered against what would have been an inevitable relegation without him. Anyway - he has my favourite song in his honour!!!
Isn't Mig doing a Masters degree? Does anyone know if it is in the area, or is he travelling to do it? No harm in him signing a new contract, with a buy out clause in order to protect our interests but not such a high one that he cant go if he wants to. Mignolet needs to smack his agent, he isnt doing him any favours.
Bri - I have been reading twitter, facebook and other formats on media. It seems some of us was a general statement about our fans.
Majority wishing him well if he does go. Alot want to keep him and let him run his contract down, giving us time to bed westwood in or look for another. What the big talking point is, at what price. Safc fans saying he's worth well over 10m plus, everyone else seems to think 6m too 8m mark is a fair price. Personally I think about 12m plus add ons. I think we'll get 10 for him.
He's doing a degree in political science at the university of Sunderland. He is not your average footballer, he comes across as very intelligent and is easily the most articulate of all the players. It would be foolish of him to move away before his course finishes so he may well opt to stat until 2015. Whatever he decides to do, good luck to the lad.
I hope we do what Jex Moxey or whatever he's called (fella from Wolves) did. Start the bidding @ 15m & stick to our guns. If Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd or Liverpool want him all of them can afford it.
I think 15m, 10m on his final year and 5m last window. If he doesn't sign a contract he has to be sold this window imo
Its been as obvious as the puss filled boils on Lee Clarkes ugly mush that Mignolet was not going to be with us next season and I've been saying this for months. I cant blame the lad at 24 (and currently ousted from the Belgium national team) wanting to be playing in a bottom 4 team year on year or at best a struggling EPL club. Sure we gave him his break but it is the lad himself that has gathered the reputation. He deserves to play Champions League football and if approached, we should allow him to go but at OUR price not the buying clubs. For me the starting price is £15m and off we go for the highest bidder. I'd be sorry to see him go but in Westwood we have a very competent keeper and we could get in Fraser Forster (if thats who we are looking at) as competition for £4m. Keeping unhappy players is a pointless task but we must ensure that we get full market value for any player who leaves. The £11m cash (after a new keeper brought in) would go towards a top class striker we so desperately need and we'd still have 2 good keepers at the club. Good luck Simon whatever happens.
