Like the white tiger, it is a color form and not a separate species. In the case of the golden tiger, this is the wide band gene; while the white tiger is due to the color inhibitor (chinchilla) gene. There are currently believed to be fewer than 30 of these rare tigers in the world, but many more carriers of the gene.
I've often thought it'd be good if the Club joined one of the 'adopt a tiger' schemes that are running so we could have our own Tigers running around. We could even name them after players. Waggy, Deano and Ash sound like good tigers names. Maybe we could get a fund going off this board?
Yes, something on those lines. I've no idea how it could be set up, but if someone sorted a way for people to chuck cash in. £3 a month's only £36, so a dozen of us chucking a tenner each in gets us 3 tigers and some cuddly toys to raffle.
The club already fund this mob on a regular basis... http://archive.21stcenturytiger.org/files/general/21st_Century_Tiger_2009_Annual_Report.pdf
