Maybe a bit heavy and mushy for a wet bank holiday afternoon but kids, some of you still are, some and wee ones, some are about to have one then you get the likes of me with the next generation of them.

My son is 34, married with a son of his own, Joseph who is 6 so I’m on my second round, but my point.

I know I’m not alone in this but our love for them is a love like no other.

During my sons life I have cried for him, lost sleep over him, gone all gooey over him, wanted to kill him but at all times been prepared to die for him, wheats it all about?

When all said and done our kids are just people, good points, bad points, just people. We fall in and out of love with our partners, a few to many in my case, but our kids we can hate but we never stop loving them, wheats that all about.

I've got no kids, but my parents have just left, and i've never known my dad be so solemn at the realization that i'm moving abroad in 5 days.

He'll be less solemn when i fly him over for a round of golf in the sunshine for his birthday in July mind.

Weird though, my dad's very much a blokes bloke, never fazed by anything, it was actually really nice, and quite touching to see him like that, so i guess that's what you're on about syd, only in reverse.

Yep, he will be torn inside BB, proud that his boy is doing well, hppy that his boy is happy, wanting to support his boy no matter what. All that means he must sit quiet and keep his emotions in check. He will be sad that his boy is so far away, feeling he is losing him, knows he aint but cant help himself. Its all about him loving his boy and believe me no matter how big and ugly you may get, to him you are and always will be his boy.

    Aye.

He'll be sound mate, i said to him 'if i was moving to London, you'd think nowt of it, it's quicker to get to Marbella than London.'

He seemed to like that way of looking at it, i've always got on great with my parents, when i was a little **** who thought i knew it all, no matter what they were there putting me back on my feet.

Any relative success i've had in my life came in the last 5 or 6 years, and without their support i'd have fell by the wayside before it happened.

Hopefully one day, if i have kids, if i can offer 10% of the backing my parents gave to some of my hair brained schemes and plans, then i'll have done alright.

    You are so right Syd.

I remember my Mum telling me, a couple of years after I moved to the south coast, how much my Dad looked forward to me coming home and simply going for a pint with him. It didn't really register at the time, but now that I have 2 sons of my own I fully undrestand what she meant.
When I look at my sons I still cannot believe how lucky I am to have these 2 special people in my life, and while we are talking about our kids, I am proud to say that my youngest son started rehearsals today for the part of Gavroche in Les Miserables in London's West End. His first performance is in the beginning of July. He's only 10 and this will be his 2nd West End show.(he was in Oliver last year).
Every time I see him on stage (saw Oliver 14 times) I am so happy to see the sheer joy that performing gives him, it reduces me to tears. I feel like such an idiot, but I guess that it is all part of being a parent.

Try having your youngest in Afghan with the rifles, I know exactly what your 'e saying with your feelings, when he was over there, if he could'nt come back home, I wanted to be with him to make sure no-one hurt him, he may be a toe rag at times, but he's my toe rag,

You have no reason to feel like an idiot, when the world is against you, you can count on your children to raise you a smile

I honestly don't know how you cope with something like that. I would never sleep.

As mentioned, i have no kids, but several life long pals are serving members of the armed forces, and i am proud of them every day.

These are wonderful people and a credit to our land, and one day our ****er government will realise this and give these people both their dues and their rewards.

I'm fortunate to have great colleagues, the supported me & my missus, especially at Christmas 09 when he was over there, best present we got was a 2 minute phone call just before dinner to say he was ok, mind you the bugger came home on leave that new years eve, got home 8:45pm, mother & I doing cartwheels, then by 9:00pm he was showered shaved & out on the lash, with the contents of my wallett
