alwaysright - we live in a nanny state now, that's why our A+E is bursting at the seems, so many people going to hospital to have their backsides wiped for them <ok>

I can only really ever remember going to A+E twice in my entire life personally and both occasions were of a serious medical nature requiring an ambulance to get me there. Trouble is these days in events such as you highlight we now wrap everyone up in cotton wool. Therefore any one that sustains anything resembling a knock or graze ends up attending A+E. Up until the last five years I didn't even know who my doctor was, not bad for my age.

I see on the news a few days ago, a hospital spokes person was asked why do they not just turn these people away. The response was it was quicker to deal with them than deal with the paperwork to turn them away. I can understand what he was saying, that is what happens when we live in a blame culture.

What happened to the good old days of plasters, huge bandages with pins through them and TCP at best <laugh>

brb I understand you well - but I suppose the most stupid point about my link is the thought that the cheesemaker could be culpable if there were any 'accidents' - hence my equally stupid point in comparing the same 'blame' to be apportioned to car makers.

I read this one http://news.sky.com/story/1073124/bubble-ban-at-parties-safety-myths-exposed couple of weeks ago
I keep telling you - I'm the only sane person left in the world ! ( despite the best efforts of the D.I.Y tills ) ( 5 consecutive 'frozen' times to date !! )

I hate hospitals and don't like going to the places. I don't recall going to one after any accident.

So my more than vocal views about eroding the freedom and privacy of law abiding citizens in the UK, takes a turn for the worse with the Tories hoping to unite with Labour in pushing through a Communications data bill. This will give the police with out warrant access, to details of all online communication in the UK - such as the time, duration, originator, recipient, and the location of the device from which it was made.

People will support it as so called protection and in light of the recent sad and shocking events at Woolwich. However, one of those nutters was arrested in Kenya in 2010 not the first story coming out about this individual. The government failed in its own communication. The world governments have failed us in their own communications, this despite the constant harassment at airports of families going on their two week breaks. Quite simply nothing that can be blamed at online activity and as admitted in the report... it was not known whether the bill would have prevented this incident.

The government failed to protect a citizen of this country despite all of its controls in place for law abiding people, which as an example include football supporters who are more restricted than those that want to cause us serious harm. It is not a new bill we need but time for these ministers in Westminster to wake up and stop playing big brother politics while failing to address the real issues and failing to protect our heroes walking down the street.

The message is for people to unite and not divide but the government appear to have their own agenda hitching a ride on the back of these events.

    Who is watching whom...

brb & grumpygit thank you for the contribution to this thread. The humour in your posts is the sort of
depths to which I hoped that everyone could achieve for this thread.

I couldn't think of a better way - the old ones are the best !

The image is of a 'Dutch' roundabout - that is to be trialed over here.

Who on Earth thought that would be a good idea ? It's utter madness to expect motor vehicles to stop ( on ) and just as they are about to exit a roundabout to allow cyclists the right of way - that's assuming that any cyclist decides to actually obey any rule of the road.
Surely making vehicles stop at this location is a recipe for disaster ( at least in this country )

Try driving in America mate. Shopping Mall areas are complete crosswalks (box junctions). Basically if a pedestrian steps in the road, you stop...

21950. (a) The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection, except as otherwise provided in this chapter.
    (b) This section does not relieve a pedestrian from the duty of using due care for his or her safety. No pedestrian may suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle that is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard. No pedestrian may unnecessarily stop or delay traffic while in a marked or unmarked crosswalk.
    (c) The driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.
    (d) Subdivision (b) does not relieve a driver of a vehicle from the duty of exercising due care for the safety of any pedestrian within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.
    Amended Sec. 8, Ch. 833, Stats. 2000. Effective January 1, 2001.
    Pedestrians Outside Crosswalks
21954. (a) Every pedestrian upon a roadway at any point other than within a marked crosswalk or within an unmarked crosswalk at an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles upon the roadway so near as to constitute an immediate hazard.
    (b) The provisions of this section shall not relieve the driver of a vehicle from the duty to exercise due care for the safety of any pedestrian upon a roadway.
    Amended Ch. 1015, Stats. 1971. Operative May 3, 1972.

brb - as you know I have been to the USA a few times - never seemed to have any problem with driving. I particularly liked the idea of turning right at red traffic lights ( and of course the price of their fuel )
I just think that the current level of compliance of rules of the road by cyclists is poor. Most cyclists seem to do what they like at road junctions. To compound the problems by introducing a cycle lane that allows bikers to cross across the face of the junction at the point of egress from a roundabout - not forgetting that immediate presence of a pedestrian crossing, will create potentially dangerous bottle necks - not helped by the appalling lack of lane discipline on roundabouts - and to top it all off the complete lack of signalling by anyone.

Standing Charge - what the hell is that ?
About this time of the year my utility contracts expire. I then look to find deals that are suitable to myself. I am sure many of you do the same.
Insofar as it concerns matters relating to home, contents & car insurance, I understand that premiums are tailored to meet my personal circumstances.
But when it comes to Gas & Electricity why does there have to be so many different tariffs ? Each one is so different to the next that it nearly boils your brains trying to calculate your own costs. Luckily I have a good calculator ! However
I can see no other reason for the differences in the ' Standing Charge ' by the energy suppliers, than to confuse us even further. Why does there have to be any difference in this 'extra' charge ? When you fill up your car you might pay a different price dependant on your choice of garage. ( a bit like the different energy tariffs ) - but you don't pay any standing charge as well.
Why can't the energy companies just set out their unit prices and let us decide which ones we'll pay. I will even allow them to confuse us a little by quoting prices that you can fix for X period hence. ( 5% higher to fix for 12 months etc ) - but the standing charges are a nonsense.

edit Some energy suppliers give you £ 100 back after 12 months
but their bloody prices are £100 dearer in the first place - it'd be like giving them an interest free loan ( I thought that's the reason why I pay income tax !)

It's on the BBC news at the moment - apparently there are over 1000 different tariffs and only 23% of people can identify the cheapest tariff for themselves. - perhaps we should ask a cuddly little animal - simples !

Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls vows to remove the winter heating allowance for our greedy pensioners ! So much for Socialism.

I expect that by the time that might happen he'll be in the House Of Lords - on a nice little earner to keep anyone warm during our winter

The price isn't so sweet - you'll will definitely need a spoonful of sugar to swallow the cost !
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22758059 ( the cost is shown at the end of the article if you can't be botherd to read all of it - you lazy sod - no wonder you're fat ! )

The retail industry really doesn't care if we are fat - all the so called 'healthy' option products are much dearer than anything with cholestral as its' main ingredient.
thank goodness I don't take sugar in my hot drinks

And this is no use - there's no bloody lid ( I'm only joking )

It's to do with a ' starter pack ' given to expectant mothers in Finland - I won't post the whole link - it will give you some exercise to find it - you could do with losing a bit of weight.
How to quickly lose 14lb of ugly fat ? - cut off your head

In principle this article sounds a good idea - especially the bit that isn't in this piece - people who use the wrong lane on roundabouts but - have you used one of our busier motorways lately ? How does the Ministry of Transport expect everyone to fit into the nearside line ? And if the middle( 2nd ) lane is meant for overtaking, what is the point of a 3rd or 4th lane ?
Whilst I welcome measures to punish poor driving ( I'd rather not punish motorists - but would hope that they drive better )
I have some sympathy for drivers where roads are not capable of handling the volume of cars. Can you imagine the tailback if we all tried to get into the nearside lane. A lot of the time it's impossible to return to the nearside lane after overtaking - due to the sheer volume of traffic. This isn't helped by lorries & vans, many of which have speed limiters preventing them from going above 60mph. Get stuck behind that lot and you'll be going backwards.
I can see this piece of legislation end up being a money spinner.

and what will happen to this driver ? This unattended vehicle 'rolled' down the road and hit & killed a pedestrian
