http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2335918/Wigan-hope-bring-Steve-Bruce-Wigan.html Surely not? There's something about that guy Whelan I don't like.
I REALLY don't see it. It was a MASSIVE decision for Bruce to drop down to the Championship last year. Now he is back in the Premier League, I just cannot see him putting himself through that again.
I was worried about this last week. With Everton set to take Martinez and the Stoke job available I thought both those clubs (Wigan and Stoke) could look to Bruce to fill the managerial vacancy. Stoke have more cash and are established, without having that much higher a level of expectation as survival for either club would be fine (for them providing the reason they weren't higher was a changing style). Then Wigan as a former club where he knew the owner and would have a better squad would be a more attractive option. Obviously Stoke appointed Hughes so that was one down, then it was the back end of the week when I realised it was Wigan that got relegated not Sunderland. . The only reason to join Wigan over staying with us now would be money. As a promoted club we're expected to be relegated, so if we survive that's a great job done, and if we go down but make a fight of it it'll just be unlucky and time for us to try to be a yo-yo club. He doesn't really have anything to lose by staying with us ahead of joining a Championship side. If he joined Wigan, as a relegated club they're one of the favourites to go up, which as we know all too well is not an easy thing to achieve. Failure to do it and he's in trouble. Throw in to it that they're not even a big club by Championship standards and their crowds are likely to be crap (although after 8 years in PL I don't know how crap that is though) meaning not much money in, and they're really not that appealing a prospect for next season at the moment as the finances will be getting trimmed straight away.
Latest odds for the Wigan job Owen Coyle 5/4 Rene Meulensteen 9/4 Karl Robinson 6/1 Steve McClaren 13/2 Mike Phelan 16/1 Graeme Jones 20/1 Gus Poyet 25/1 Roy Keane 28/1 Eddie Howe 33/1 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 33/1 Phil Neville 33/1 Alex McLeish 40/1 Mick McCarthy 40/1 Ricardo Moniz 40/1 David Weir 40/1 Stuart Pearce 50/1 Paul Jewell 50/1 Neil Lennon 50/1 Martin O'Neill 50/1 Roberto Di Matteo 50/1 Tony Pulis 50/1 Billy Davies 50/1 Gary Megson 50/1 Steve Kean 50/1 Uwe Rosler 66/1 Gianfranco Zola 66/1 Alan Curishley 66/1 Gareth Southgate 80/1
Graeme Jones at 20/1 might be worth a punt. When Rodgers left Swansea and they were looking for someone to follow in the footsteps of Martinez and Rodgers they got as far as interviewing him for the job. With the advantages of knowing the setup and players and being cheap. Looking at that list, there's only Coyle who I'm a bit meh about and Poyet for reputation and being able to do a solid job that are really considerable for the position. The rest are crap or just as unproven as Jones, and most will need compo paying to their old club.
Cannot see it happening in all honesty. It would not make sense him dropping down. IMHO although Wigan are favorites to come up next season I think they will struggle badly. The above poster posted the latest odds, Steve bruce is nowhere to be seen
I can see Wigan falling through the championship down into league 1. I feel like they have been riding their luck for season after season. in my opinion... they remind me of L**DS - not as good as they once were!
As the seventh richest British manager with a reported net worth of 14 million quid I dont think money is what Bruce is about. He's found a club, a group of players, and owners that he's comfortable with, and as a North-East lad the bright lights of London...and even Stoke and Wigan ..are unlikely to tempt him. He'll be ours for quite a while IMO.
I think thats a **** up from whoever posted it. The story is also in the Sun online. (Edit: original poster source good but layers/oddschecker mistake not getting Bruce odds up)
No odds at Skybet but they have a book on the manager, very strange, would have a pound at those odds as Bruce has been known to jump ship in the past and a lot of our managers make very bad career moves!
Slow news day. It must have been a case of the reporter needing x amount of words but only had the Figueroa & Chester bits & thought, what bull can I fill it up with.
The thing with the Wigan job is there is no obvious candidate. I really can't see anyone standing out as first choice.
Good stuff from Dudge here: http://www.thisishullandeastriding.co.uk/story-19191068-detail/story.html?#axzz2V4DxAls1 I believe this team spirit is why SB wouldn't even think of splitting.
Wur shouldn't be worried here, I down't see any reason he'd jump ship to go down to a lower level, and all the rest of it.
