If anything, Monaco's run to the final was far more impressive, knocking out Real Madrid in the last 16 and Chelsea in the semis. His time in the Premier League demonstrated two things. Firstly that Wenger is unable to retain a title (see also 1999, 2003), and also that Man Utd were rebuilding - as their two third-placed finishes in that time are the worst since the Premier League began, yet they responded with winning the title from Chelsea in Mourinho's third season. As for Inter, as I said he came in when Inter were unopposed: Milan and Juventus were all over the place at the time, certainly not title-winning teams, so the title was Inter's to lose. They did win a more far more competitive set of Champions League fixtures, although it's once again hard to look beyond the money he had to spend given he paid huge fees for Sneijder, Milito and Eto'o that season, as well as Quaresma and Muntari the previous season.

Agree with all of this, I had a similar post on our board a few weeks ago, mourinio is a good manager but he is not as good as Chelsea fans and the media portray. Throw in his massive ego and desire to be the centre of attention, and you get what happened at real, and is the reason Man u did not consider him to replace SAF, with mourinio its all about him rather than the club, and truly massive clubs like real and Man u won't accept someone thinking he is bigger than the club.
Mourinho's mistake at Real was to get political. He thought he was bigger than the club and could do that. At Real Madrid, big mistake!..

Yeah but I'm not basing it purely on domestic success I'm trying to analyse the bigger picture. People said that Serie A could not produce a CL winner because it was too weak. Mourinho overcame a Chelsea side that was smashing teams by sixes and sevens and then Barcelona at their peak. He also took a village team to 5th in the Portuguese league, even finishing above the likes of Sporting Lisbon. Whilst at Inter he also had a positive net spend.
Better than any manager you've had in your history though and won a treble, something which only 4 managers have achieved. Man U wanted Mourinho, but he didn't want them for all sorts of reasons but mainly location. His daughter is studying in London which makes it easier for him to live there for family reasons. Man U were flat out rejected by Mourinho and Ancelotti so had to settle for The unglamorous appointment of Moyes. Anyone that thinks Moyes was first choice needs their head checked. The Glazers only care about the brand and making money. Not gonna win many Chinese/Indonesian/Korean gloryhunters over with a name like "David Moyes" who has won nothing in his career. Mourinho had more power than any other manager Real have had and Perez wanted to keep him, but it's well documented that key players such as Ronaldo, Ramos and Casillas threatened to leave if Mourinho was kept on. With presidential elections looming Perez couldn't afford to take any risks and had to pander to the players egos or face the possibility of not being re-elected.
