Newcastle will only try to sign 2 players and have NO interest in Ince nor Eder.

NEWCASTLE United’s summer recruitment drive is likely to be limited to a striker and a central defender as the club takes a conscious decision to add quality rather than quantity this close season.

United are yet to make an offer for any player – either in contract or out of contract – and believe their January business has given them some of the strength in depth that was missing earlier in the season. But a striker is the club’s top priority, along with a centre-back – even if they manage to keep hold of skipper Fabricio Coloccini.

Like most Premier League clubs, Newcastle are in no rush to do business early and many senior figures at the club are currently away.

There has been a flurry of speculation about the future of some of the club’s key men but there have been no enquiries from any interested suitors yet. Newcastle are prepared for enquiries for Hatem Ben Arfa, Yohan Cabaye and Papiss Cissé but are not in the mood to sell any of them unless they receive “game-changing offers” as they look for a vast improvement on last season’s 16th place.

United are monitoring a number of other younger players, including Derby County’s Will Hughes, but any further movement is likely to depend on outgoings once again.

There is no interest in Blackpool’s Tom Ince or Braga striker Eder, who is still injured.

Departures are likely, but it is more likely to be fringe squad men who are following Danny Simpson and Steve Harper through the exit door with Newcastle prepared to listen for offers for the likes of Mike Williamson and midfielder Dan Gosling. They will also use pre-season to judge whether Sammy Ameobi, Shane Ferguson, James Tavernier and the returning Haris Vuckic have made enough progress to give them a chance of playing any part in the first-team squad.

Middlesbrough are interested in taking Ameobi on loan again next season.

It appears increasingly unlikely that Newcastle will move for St Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, once considered their number one summer striker target.

It appears increasingly unlikely that Newcastle will move for St Etienne’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, once considered their number one summer striker target.

They are ready to look elsewhere now, however, and Aubameyang did not mention Newcastle when he talked about the clubs that have opened discussions with him. Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Swansea City were all name-checked by the Gabon international, but Newcastle’s interest – which mushroomed into two separate bids in January – has not been followed up this summer.

“I have met with Rudi Völler (sporting director of Bayer Leverkusen) twice, but whether or not St Etienne accept the (Leverkusen’s) offer is a different matter,” he said.

“Dortmund have been following me for more than a year now. I have met with Michael Laudrup and they (Swansea) have a good project, but I need Champions League (football) to progress.”

Meanwhile, The Journal understands the club are preparing to return to Portugal again this summer for pre-season. Having broken off talks with organisers of a tournament based in South Africa, they are now planning to stay within Europe for their summer training camp, with both the Algarve and Lisbon under consideration.

A game against Sporting Lisbon is a possibility – and Braga have also been sounded out about a fixture in Portugal in July.

United played in the Algarve Tournament last summer and even though the event was a commercial disappointment for the organisers, Newcastle were impressed with the facilities.

Trips to America, Brazil and the Far East were mooted during the course of the year, but United pulled out of talks with sponsors in South Africa a couple of weeks ago after delays in getting a “sign-off” from local companies.

To be fair I think the fact we signed 5 players in January might have something to do with it. Also wouldn't be surprised if we sign more, as this probably doesn't take into account us potentially losing players such as Ben Arfa and Cabaye.

I think if they sell the stars as some would say, we'd replace them with youngsters. Overall I'm nervous about next season.

The headline of this story is quite misleading. It says that 2 additional big names will be signed, and some young talent, and if people leave they'll be replaced, citing colo in particular. However the Journal know fine well that what sells papers, and more importantly gets heavy web traffic on their comments is a bit of controversy.

I really like Mark Douglas but this piece contradicts itself numerous times and is purposefully spun a certain way.

Best to ignore ALL pre-season speculation. Once players have been pictured at the club wearing a Toon shirt, then I'll believe. Meanwhile, it's a waste of energy.

That is probably quite accurate, if outgoings are replaced and a few development players are brought in as well as the 2 we just might do well as long as Alan Pardew sets us up well enough.

I think we may be making only 2 additions to the squad, but if Cabaye or whoever leaves, they'll get replaced.

I'd personally hope for a striker and a CB.

2 good quality additions to the squad, CB and striker, would probably be enough.

this would leave us 2 strikers plus Campbell up front.

marv and hba are good on the wings and we have plenty of competition for the central midfield positions.

we'd have two decent LB's, 4 CB's plus Willo and youngsters, and Debouchy/Anita RB

Once Krul returns we're ok for keepers.

A little less depth than I'd like, but not too bad.

and as has been poitned out, the story has virtually no credibility anyway

2 players ! that is a joke; Bale and Messi ? Di canio has signed about 4 or 5 players already and we still need 4 or 5, and he is signing quality luckily. We (SAFC) and yourselves have had rubbish seasons and the warning is there for us. I want to see us both going for that 4th spot champions league place or winning the F A cup, the frigging ambition in the north east is pathetic, get the money spent is what I say and that will have to be around £100 m between us.

That's reassuring to hear from the board. Assuming, of course, that they are also planning for no injuries or suspensions this season.

No, it's a purposeful drive to get the club to finish about fourtheenth this coming season.

Monty: The ambition for Ashley is NOT to finish in the top four. That will create more costs and therefore a lower profit than finishing just below half-way. That's his ambition: to maximise his personal income by means of Newcastle United Personal Money Faucet Inc rather than drive to the club into the top four. His personal target sadly has nothing in common with the footballing supporting fans.

If I had a season ticket then I would cancel it.

Ummm, you do know that Ashley hasn't taken any money out of the club, don't you ?

And I gather you don't really mind failing to follow the FFP rules, so that we coulldn't play in Europe even if we made the top 4 ?

Had to pop this in here, classic Pardew:

"We need to be a lot stronger in depth, rather than individual quality," Pardew explained as the season came to a close. "The team was strong, when we could field it, but we couldn't field it enough."

    The club's response?

"Shut yer fckin cakehole, gimpy. We'll get you the lad Pearce from Reading on a free. You know what you owe, Pardew, so put your knickers on and make me a cup of tea."

(Note: the latter may be a fabrication...the former is a word for word quote)

The criteria that we look for in a manager is simple, he must unlikely to gain too much respect because respect is power and also one who's ambitions are modest and will be likely to accept what he's told by Derek Llambias who in my opinion seems to pull all the strings at the club and last but not least, comes at a small price.

A decent Managing director or a Chairman would look for a manager who will be respected and to have a good knowledge of the English game as well as an exciting footballing philosophy and a thirst to improve the academy and nurture the youths into Premier League standard football players and also knowing the line between being compassionate and a disciplinarian and also to have a good understanding of his players and how to play them to their strengths and to coach the players so they progress on a technical level and also keep them in peak physical condition.
