Anyone remember the daft and pathetic cup competitions of the past that were supposed to retain interest in football in the close season. Some memories are hazy but I think I remember the following The Texaco cup - didn't this have an experimental offside rule which only applied to the pitch width covering the penalty area? the Watney cup - don't remember any more than this The Anglo Italian cup - our first sight of some daft Italian shirts that made Malcolm Allison sit up and take notice - a season later Man City would be seen in something with a stripe running diagonally from shoulder to waist - made them a laughing stock for a while I remember The Anglo Scottish cup - don't remember The Intertoto cup - is that still going? 410 games for a qualifying birth in the Europa League. I'm asleep already! The Simod cup - what was that? Home International Championship - in my youth the only interest this held was more howlers from Gary Sprake, George Best in something other than a red shirt and otherwise how awful Northern Ireland had become. Other memories greatly welcomed
I remember the Simod Cup well and it looked like we would need to dust off the bus once again as we made the semi-finals and were in good shape to win it outright - until Charlton dumped us out. Hell that was a bloody cold night! There was also some kind of regional mini league in the summer and I remember us playing teams such as Peterborough, Lincoln City and Notts County. What it was called I really cannot remember but I did go to a few of those games to keep my interest alive.
I regularly used the Nottingham-Norwich route for business so passed through either North or South depending on whether I used the A52 or A17.I rarely got delayed unless of course Threekingham were drawn at home to Quadring Eaudyke in the Twenty Foot Drain cup.
I used to live about 200 yards from Sincil Bank, on Arthur street if you know Lincoln! Gainsborough, back then, used to be a sh**hole, but they were starting to do it up when I left Lincoln in 2000!
yeah, though not necessarily in a good way. we now have a McDonalds and a KFC is currently being built. me and the missus are leaving, going to the Philippines, adding to Canaries in the far east.
We used to pick up a lad from the council eastate down past the Road Car bus garage, his parents were both in prison, he was "looked after" by his 19 year old sister who had 4 kids by 4 different fathers! He didn't stand a chance, poor bugger!
