My memories of the Bears go back to the great William (Fridge) Perry who could have taken down the entire Football League.

I'm very impressed! Dick Butkus could easily take down a pack of wolves.

Insects have exoskeletons which limit their size. As they get bigger, oxygen cannot be transferred through the spiracles into their bodies.

In that case, I take it all back! They could also drown us with all the splashing. Lethal.

Black bears are the best bears. I really want to hug one, but it might not turn out to be as fun as I imagine.

Hahaha did that bear just refuse to eat the Subway meat? We'll pay for it but a scavenging bear won't even touch it?!

Yeah, that confused me so I did some research. Turns out 85% of a black bear's diet is vegetation, and most of the meat they eat is insects. In some areas they eat fish but most don't really have access to any. When they first come out of hibernation, they may eat dead animals they come across that didn't survive the winter, but that's about it. I guess this guy wasn't interested in meat. Why he didn't help himself to the salad is not clear.

If all beasties were the same size, surely a bloody eagle would take some beating. The advantage of flight, plus super-sized talons and beak. **** that!

Also, on the animals we could have in a fight. I reckon I could take an emperor penguin. And any other penguin for that matter.

I'd like to take the opportunity to suggest that you watch the Lion the Crocodile and the Water Buffalo (type in no particular order) on you tube. It's been around a while, but there may be few that haven't seen it? It's pretty gripping to say the least.

Hmmmm........in the first place.....surely it would depend on the area in which the bear found itself trapped. The ones depicted in Rome (three bears versus 3 wolves) is a scene from the bear bating competitions in the arena's. Not of a hunting party of Wolves in the open in the open. It would be very rare for a bear to be caught in the open by wolves. It would find high ground that the wolves cannot get to. The most likely scenario would be if the bear had to protect its young until the young was in a safe place. Under those circumstances the wolves would not have a cat in hells chance no matter how good they were as a pack of three.

Fran, I believe that insects were able to become considerably bigger in prehistoric times, i.e. Carboniferous period etc. The classic being huge dragonflies. I think this was due to higher oxygen levels?
