This photo is from 1910, it shows two barges that tried to get out of a dock and into the River Hull, but they got jammed together while the tide went out. You can see the people trying to unload the boats before the tide came back in(posted for no other reason than I thought it was a great image)... please log in to view this image
Is this by any chance in that Flashback paper? Decent photos in there of Hull pre Luftwaffe demolition.
It might have been in there, but as far as I remember, I got it off the Backtrack Hull Facebook page, there's some great images on there... please log in to view this image https://www.facebook.com/BacktrackHull?fref=ts
Looks pretty grand there. I hate the state of some the centre now, particularly Whitefriargate. It's almost a ghost town with most the shops boarded up.
It is indeed. Whitefriargate used to be fantastic back in the day, Hull's premier shopping street... please log in to view this image
It certainly was, my Grandpa and Grandma used to take me Saturday morning to a coffee house call Kardoma (Not sure if that is the right spelling), but certainly was a nice area to shop.
Any idea which dock gates they were? Hull is the same as most town centres, it has lost it's soul. The treat with my Nan (done up in her best - fox-tails n'all) was afternoon tea at Lyons down the Gate - the customer counted there!
Is my memory playing tricks or was there a shop just a few doors down Whitefriargate where you got served through a hatch in the window? I'm thinking around 1970ish.
I saw the image and opened it in a new tab earlier in the week, but it's taken me until now to post it and now I'm not entirely sure where I got it from. It did say which which dock it was and if I can find it again, I'll post the details.
Lyons was on the right (as you look at this pic) and Kardomah was the very next biz along. It had an upstairs too.
anyone remember the padgets [spelling] ice cream vendor who was always at the top of the street. without doubt the best ice cream ive tasted anywhere. and when it comes down to ice cream,i know me onions!!!!
What was the pub called, that was on the left - between Burtons and M&S? It had a little statue of Wilberforce Monument set in the front of the building. Was it 'The Monument'?
