Mark Hughes at Stoke: QPR criticism will motivate me Comments (101) Mark Hughes says criticism of his time at QPR will help motivate him to ensure he is a success as Stoke manager. The Welshman, 49, has signed a three-year contract at Stoke just six months after being sacked by Rangers. He endured a difficult 11-month spell at Loftus Road, winning only eight of 34 games in charge. "I have listened to what people have said about my managerial ability and I can assure you I will use that as a motivation," he said. Mark Hughes's managerial career Appointed part-time Wales manager in 1999 Named Blackburn manager in 2004 Took charge at Manchester City in 2008 but sacked after 18 months in December 2009 Led Fulham to eighth place in Premier League in 2010-11 before resigning. Appointed QPR boss in January 2012 but sacked in November. Named Stoke manager in May 2013. "I've had something like 270 games as a Premier League manager, but people do tend to look at the last year or so. "But I don't regret moving to QPR. A lot of managers have gone in there and found it difficult." Hughes signed a dozen players last summer but failed to win any of his opening 12 league games of the season and was sacked in November. Harry Redknapp took over but was unable to keep QPR in the Premier League. Hughes conceded the club had tried to do too much too soon and said he was aiming for steady progress at Stoke. "If I am honest, we all tried to run there before we could walk, and that was the mistake that we made," he said. "I made mistakes that I will learn from." Hughes will be joined at Stoke by coaches Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki, and he expects the stable environment at the club - owned by Peter Coates for eight years - will prevent a repeat of the errors made at Loftus Road. He said: "There is solid ownership at the club and you need that behind you to give yourself an opportunity to be successful." The former Manchester United striker aims to add an attacking edge to a Stoke team that only scored 34 goals in 38 Premier League games last season. "It's not a case of wiping away all the hard work that's been put in place in previous seasons. That would be crazy," said Hughes. A Stoke City fan stages his own demonstration against Mark Hughes' appointment "But I would like to think I can make them a bit more offensive and maybe that's where the club hasn't helped itself in the past by not scoring enough goals." Coates wants Hughes to promote players from the club's academy as well as bring in new talent. Previous manager Tony Pulis had paid large fees for players with little sell-on value, including the £10m signing of Peter Crouch, then 30, from Spurs in 2011 on a four-year deal. "We want to have a sustainable model," said Coates. "We can do that and still provide funds for the manager." Hughes's appointment was met with a lukewarm reception by Stoke supporters, with one fan protesting by putting a placard on the back of his van calling for Hughes to go - even before he was confirmed as manager. Bryan Shaw, chairman of Stoke City's Supporters Club, said: "If you ask the majority of Stoke supporters, Mark Hughes would not be their first choice. That said, whoever the chairman appoints we have to get behind. We just have to hope he proves us wrong." Hughes, who has also managed Wales, Blackburn, Manchester City and Fulham, takes over from Pulis, who left the club on 21 May after seven years in charge. Pulis took Stoke to the 2011 FA Cup final, where they were beaten by Manchester City , earning them a place in the Europa League.
'Solid ownership' at the club. If there is a veiled dig at TF there that is unbelievable as he was probably too supportive of MH
Regrettably, some of what he says makes sense - "If I am honest, we all tried to run there before we could walk, and that was the mistake that we made," he said. "I made mistakes that I will learn from." and "But I don't regret moving to QPR. A lot of managers have gone in there and found it difficult.". Time will tell but I suspect it's not going to be quite the debacle of his time with us.
I think I can almost guarantee that Hughes will go there and do quite well. It would be typical and highlight what a debacle this last season has been. I dont wish Hughes ill, I just want us to be oUt of the spotlight, hEads down and get on with Improving quietly and efficiently.
I don't wish the man and certainly not Stoke, ill either. I've never particularly rated him, and as at Fulham he inherits a well-orgainised team. So he might be all right for them for at least a season, providing someone else is choosing the players coming and going.
For Hughes to say "But I don't regret moving to QPR. A lot of managers have gone in there and found it difficult." and "There is solid ownership at the club and you need that behind you to give yourself an opportunity to be successful." is pretty sickening. Of all the managers QPR have had the last few years it is hard to think of one who was given greater financial resources and such a free hand to buy the Players he wanted, and such strong and overlong support he got from TF. If he found it dificult he should take a harder look at what his predecessor achieved with vastly less Financial and other backing from his Chairmen, yet achieved far more. I don't wish Hughes ill, but it amazes me that another PL Club is giving him another chance.
In the light of the various comments, I think I actually do wish him ill. Not personally - don't want him to get ill or anything daft like that - but if he does well at Stoke, all the 'blame' will remain at LR and I don't want that. I want him to do just as badly at Stoke so we can solidly blame him for the debacle that is QPR at present.
i'm sure he's thought of that and has come up with the name Kia Joorabchian to do the buying and selling. Hughes will just be the middleman.
I don't think there is anything much in this, apart from Hughes' crass stupidity. He's bound to compliment the owners until they sack him. Can't see TF taking offense. It's no different to our Harold repeatedly telling us what lovely good people we have until he wants something or someone and threatens to leave unless he gets his way. Only now it's a whole new team.
Putting the cart before the horse - that's all he ever does and will continue to do so. If he's talking about changing his methods, and he makes the changes and he succeeds - it means that he's not proved a thing except that he WILL prove to the world that what he was doing before DOES NOT work, did not work or will ever work. He will have realized that hiring mercenaries and paying ridiculous wages to them is NOT the formula! But - the crux of it all is, whether he can actually COACH anybody or get anybody to listen to his drivel in the team room. Of which skill, I doubt, he has any. He should simply stick to being a glum backroom staff.
He's not fessing up. Blaming on other factors other than his total lack of coaching skill to get the lads together and keep them together. Typical. He has no skill in talking to the squad - that much is obvious. So unless he's gathered himself a really good sports psychologist (and I am sure he has) to help him use clever and correct words of motivation, he'll carry on failing. And I hope he does, until he apologizes personally to the fans and the owners for the debacle he brought us, for the amount of money he wasted.
Cheeky QPR fans place advert thanking new Stoke City boss Mark Hughes - for nothing 31 May 2013 13:24 'A message from QPR fans: Mark Hughes – Thanks (for nothing),' reads billboard paid for by R's fans Sarky Sparky: The advert that QPR fans put out thanking Stoke for taking Mark Hughes A group of QPR fans have become the latest to place an advert thanking their old boss - but their praise of Stoke City's new manager Mark Hughes is firmly tongue-in-cheek. The advert went on display today at a garage close to Stoke's Britannia Stadium and reads: "A message from QPR fans: Mark Hughes – Thanks (for nothing)". It was posted by the fans behind the Open all R's podcast via the Amscreen LinkLocal advertising network. The cheeky advert comes the day after the former QPR boss was unveiled as Tony Pulis' replacement at Stoke. Such adverts are all the rage at the moment, with Pulis himself having thanked Stoke fans in his local paper last week, which came after a group of Manchester City fans thanked their former boss Roberto Mancini, following his earlier advert . Hughes left QPR last November after a disastrous eleven-month spell in charge, which saw the Loftus Road club collect four points from the opening dozen games of the season, which eventually saw them relegated. An Open all R's spokesman today said: "It sticks in the throat that Mark Hughes will be operating in the Premier League next season whilst QPR have to pick up the pieces of a disastrous season in the Championship. "Football fans are known for their gallows humour and our message is a bit of fun – and maybe a bit of a tongue-in-cheek warning to Stoke fans."
