Opposition is already growing against the imminent appointment of Mark Hughes as Stoke manager as the club's fans express their unhappiness surrounding his arrival, which is expected to be confirmed on Thursday morning.

The former Wales, Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham and QPR boss will be announced as the successor to Tony Pulis, who incidentally wasn't widely backed among the club's fans, but he will not come with the supporters' blessing.

A sign reading 'Hughes out!' was on Wednesday pictured outside of the Britannia Stadium from a fan, who wished only to be known as 'Carl' and said his views represented the vast majority of Stoke's fans.

'It is not just me,' he told the BBC after paying £50 for the sign. 'It is the thoughts of 90% of Stoke fans. Security made me move on from the Britannia so I drove around.

'I parked on motorway bridges and people were beeping their support at me and taking photos.

'He is not a long-term appointment, look at his track record, but it looks as though he is going to be appointed anyway.'

Hughes was sacked by QPR after their disastrous start to last season, which ended in relegation from the Premier League.

Before that, however, he impressed while in charge of Wales, Blackburn and Fulham, with his spell at City, before Fulham, by no means a failure.

Pulis left Stoke at the end of last season after a largely successful seven years in which he established them in the top flight. Those against his management largely disagreed with his style of play, and it is thought Stoke trust Hughes to inspire a more entertaining brand of football.

The trend is regardless a worrying one, however. The hostility from Chelsea fans towards Rafa Benitez was as high-profile as it comes but there were also other instances.

When David Moyes was appointed as Manchester United's manager '#MoyesOut' trended on Twitter, while opposition to Steve Bruce's proposed appointment at Wolves forced the club's board to change their mind and they have since suffered two relegations in two seasons.
