My holidays, like many, have gone in cycles.

When I was a boy it was bus trips, a caravan at Scarborough or a B&B at Blackpool, never abroad.

When I had a young son and little money it was self catering, Scarborough and Cornwall. I then made a few bob so it was the usual, Spain, Canaries and Tunisia.

Son left home and it was Barbados and then I found Cyprus.

Now I hate the hassle of airports, kids and packing so its home, drive to Northumberland and of course I have Osca to think about.

My regret, when I was a single dirty sod it was Butlins, missed out on 18-30 ****alongs.

When a was a kid it was pontins/butlins at filey, scarboro etc.
Now its america every other year (theme parks) i'm too old but still love the thrill. Alternate years its Greek islands, spain etc. Fortunately can speak enough spanish & greek to order drinks food, bus/train tickets etc.
Away to gran canaria in july. Will probably have 12 hour drinkie sessions, couple of kebabs a day and being bald come back with a head looking like a swan vesta match.

My first visit to Cyprus was with the army in 1979 and I vowed to return there one day, which I did 30 years later in 2009 to marry my wife Karen.

This year we are going to southern Ireland to try to trace some of my Irish relatives. My father was Irish, but died unexpectedly when he was only 49, giving me no opportunity to really grill him about my Irish ancestors. I have never met a single member of my Irish family, so I am hopeful that I will find someone by actually going there for the first time in my life.

One of my first ever memories was of a holiday trainride to Coxgreen in the early fifties but Beecham put an end to any repetition of that.
I don't want this to sound like a you-was-lucky-we-lived-in-a-paper-bag-in-hole-in-t'road line but after growing up in Pennywell with the high point of the six weeks' school holidays being the two weeks when me dad was on holiday and we could play cricket with him every day round King George V playing fields, I was lucky enough to get into language teaching and translation, living in Paris and Switzerland, which enabled me to take all sorts of holidays sowing my wild oats around North America and Europe. (Still missed the cricket and me dad though.)
Then, when I was 45, all that stopped, thank God, and I married a Spanish girl. We got married in Montego Bay, Jamaica (17 years ago!) and since then it's been holidays in Spain and Central America for me to understand her culture, and Sunderland, London (where my brother lives) and sundry places around the British Isles (St. Yves, Llandudno, Fort William and Galway spring to mind), for her (and our daughter) to understand mine.
This will carry on, I hope, with a visit to York in July (wonder why?) and then three weeks in Galicia where my wife hails from. All 300 members of her family are now Sunderland supporters but they're having problems getting me enthused about Real Sociedad, Real Betis or Real Madrid. I tell them that Sunderland are the only Real team.
The holidays and lifestyle have changed radically since those days in Portchester Road (or was it Porchester?) but one thing remains constant ... HAWAY THE LADS!

My story goes back about 30 years - can't remember the date.
At that time we had two youngsters under 10.

We were having a caravan holiday at Prestatyn, North Wales.
The week we were there Sunderland were playing away to Stockport mid week (not that far away.... well, not really..)

Anyway we decided to go. Got there no bother, but the guy on the gate spotting the accents didn't want to let us in, in case there was bother.
But he relented - perhaps unfortunately for us, as Sunderland performed their usual ... and we came away rather despondent....

The point of my story ...... my son never wanted to go to a match again!

I now plough a lone furrow in our household!

    :)

A sad tale indeed. I don't think I could spend my life ploughing such a lone furrow. Funny how life hinges on a nothing, isn't it?
(Still get a kick from that picture of yours of Stan Anderson.)

Chats, was porchester close to the pennywell inn pub? I grew up on the other side and frequented the eagle public house. A common watering hole for the upper echelons of society inc, neuro surgeons, barristers etc. I think not. you had to have at least 2 asbo's, a gbh and an attempted manslaughter on your charge sheet just to be allowed in. Getting out was another matter. Usually via the windows. Used to be a pound sweep on the coach for away matches on how many would be coming home without being arrested/ charged/ locked up for the weekend. Good memories tho.

Maldives for me, been 4 times now on a different island each time, it's simply the most beautiful place on earth.
My ideal holiday is relaxing on a beautiful beach, lots of scuba diving and spa treatments and lots of good food and drink.I don't think there is anywhere in the world better.
Zanzibar is also very beautiful, so too is Africa been to Tanzania on safari and currently planning next years holiday to South Africa and Mozambique.
In my youth it used to be Poole or the Isle of Man, some great memories of The Isle of Man.

Comanchio I was in Vietnam last year and couldn't recommend it more highly. I've visited most of Asia and Vietnam is a wonderful place. It's poor and quite rough but the people are fantastic. I did Ho chi min and the cu chi tunnels
Which is a great trip and you can shoot a variety of weapons there. Is recommend an AK47!!!!!! But you have to visit the north. I flew to hanoi then arranged a trip to halog bay through the hostel I stayed in. It was the best holiday of my life and I've:emoticon-0103-cool: been all over the world.
**** its making me want to book up again!!! Unfortunately I'm skint off. Travelling the usa in march!
