Not if you operate a continental model. You appoint the manager for a defined period at a specific cost (often with results-based bonuses). Benitez will have known exactly what his base remuneration would be, and that at the end of the season that was it money-wise. <ok>

Only man Utd have this so called successful stable model everyone is spouting out.

Madrid, milans, barca, Chelsea and city change their manager on a regular basis and are usually there or there abouts when it comes to winning trophies.

Now I admit abramovich has made some embarrassing decisions but the success the Chelsea fans have enjoyed this past decade out weighs that by a million miles to suggest you'd support Ipswich is ridiculous.

What no one has mentioned so far is that there were only about 11 Germans on the pitch last night. Both Bayern's goals where scored by non Germans and Dortmund's from the son of Turkish migrants. This is a defining point in the re emergence of German football as a World force - in the national team there are now about half of the starting eleven whose parents where born outside of Germany. The advantage that Germany has is that geographically it lies at the crossroads of Europe and that most of their immigrant population comes from other football playing countries ,eg. Turkey, Spain, Italy, Poland etc. most of whom are now nationalized. In contrast English football profits little from its' commonwealth links e.g. India and Pakistan. German football has also seen a steady boom in public interest since holding the World Cup in 2006, worth remembering that 16 of their club stadiums where upgraded then at little cost to the clubs themselves - a situation unthinkable in England. Bayern and Borussia have certainly both profitted from continuity, but there are a lot of other factors working to their advantage. Borussia Dortmund play in front of the highest crowds in Europe (30,000 of them standing) - but then 800,000 people live in Dortmund and they have the city to themselves (Not like in Manchester or Liverpool), because of the relationship between club and city all ticket holding fans get free public transport on match days from the surrounding area. Again unthinkable in England. Move down the leagues in Germany and you see that support has almost totally withered away by about the 3rd tier, support in Germany concentrates itself on the 1 Bundesliga - whereas in England it's more spread over the leagues.

Interesting points, thanks for that Cologne!

On the point of "only" 11 Germans on the pitch, that's still 50%. Looking at Man U's appearance stats this season, only Carrick, Ferdinand, Rooney and Welbeck are English and appeared in over half their league campaign. For City it's Hart, Barry, Lescott, Milner. Chelsea: Cole, Lampard, Cahill, Moses. Arsenal: Walcott, Gibbs, Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain. So an all-English final would have had maybe 8 Englishmen on the pitch, or only 37%. Factor in that there's considerably more German internationals playing abroad than English ones, and that 11 is still a very good figure.

For the same reason that I wouldn't want to swap places with Bob Diamond and be the boss of a huge bank getting paid zillions. That sort of Big Time Charlie-ism just doesn't appeal.

And what exactly does your shambles know about winning trophies, anyone who ever watched it is either dead or in some council run retirement home remeniscing with their pet walking stick.

I hear that age has taken its toll on the trophy room and is held together by dust, spiders webs and dead flies.

The same label could be thrown at ourselves from teams in the lower echelons of English football.

Our club is now one of the richest in the World.

How incredible that you can post something which is both uninteresting and untrue.

Did you get a trophy for beating Bayern? You should have, then you could have got a trophy room to keep it in. <ok>

Do you get a trophy for every time you mention you won something 400 years ago?

Winning a cup with an inflated pigs bladder hardly counts, why don't you try winning something in the present era for a change?

Is that "sad" as pathetic, or "sad" as unhappy.

    Probably both.
