Morning - whoops- afternoon all ( a man is entitled to a Sunday lie-in, especially with a big day ahead of him on Monday!)

    Re: plumbers

A standard response in the gigging bands game (hardest game in the world, the gigging game) to the punter who responds to a perfectly reasonable quote with the words "How Much???":
"Just imagine what the bill would be if you asked seven plumbers to work for you for 5 hours, with a 3 hour drive each way." <grr>

I have a mate who is a plumber and in a band. When they say "How much?", he then gives them his 'day job' price, and tells them to pick. <laugh>

Went for a 'walk' with Mrs GG this afternoon. We met a neighbour of ours who was out walking his dog. We often meet him in this way; have known him for some years. He's getting on a bit, has lost his wife, is a little bit deaf.

We told him him about tomorrow, he wasn't aware of the game, but said he used to go to the Vic occasionally with a friend. "I went to school in Watford", he said. "Oh yes?", I said. "So did I. Which school did you go to?"

Turns out he was at WBGS, 1937-1942!! We started discovering teachers we had in common. Leo, BB etc will know what we found:
Fanny Lister Frank Thomas and Ben Marrow. He mentioned Inky Knight as well, but I can't remember either way about him, it seems familiar. Anyone?
He told us that the boys did fire-watching at the school during the war. Also that amongst the male teaching staff who went into the forces (and some, sadly, not coming back) Ben Marrow was carted off as a conscientious objector because he was a Quaker.

Anyway, for some strange reason I find this whole episode a comforting omen for tomorrow. No reason I should- but...

Inky was the Chemistry teacher there. I suspect that the nickname 'Inky' may be a generic one for those with the surname Knight - but I seem to recollect we gave it to him because our favourite pastime in his theory classes was flicking ink over his lab coat as he was writing on the blackboard. I often wondered how he never twigged what we were doing. <laugh>

Strange that Ben Marrow was a conscientious objector - both he and his wife, who taught Religion, were fairly quick to resort to corporal punishment, especially in my case. :(

Yes - I remember inky too - as well as Dusty Miller - Maths. GEG - Greenwell Geography - "Ope the Pope" Openshaw - and younger but for you musicians Didcott I think

I knew Ben Marrow was a Quaker and hence would have been a conscientiuos objector. Yes - he was not slow in using the slipper.

Known in our year as Shiner due to a dubious habit he had when coaching rugby - during scrum practice he used to delight in rubbing bottoms to encourage us to pack tighter. Evil sod he was, never did like him.
