I think the Gurkhas are worthy of a greater mention than Indian troops, their contribution to the British Army is greater.

Considering World War 2 included the Japanese invading India there was an obligation for Indian troops to be involved, and lets not forget the British forgotten Army who defended India at Imphal & Kohima, recently voted our greatest battle.

The Gurkhas were an amazing fighting force, my granddad fought with them in Burma and often recounted amazing stories of the the things they used to do.

I used to pass their barracks every day on the way to my office in Hong Kong and I used to give a respectful nod to the guards at the gate.

As Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw once said "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or is a Gurkha."

Thankfully not - although I've spent a lot of time there hence the somewhat ironic appropriation of one of their words. So I can appreciate you calling me out on that.

In the case of the letter I responded to, I think 'trash' is a good word though - its 'trashy', in the sense that it was obviously written by some uneducated housewife with little or no conception of what she's talking about. For example:

What happened here in July 2002? Think she means 2005.

Its called asymmetric or guerrilla warfare, its what you do when you're massively outgunned or outnumbered. We had contingency plans in the event of a successful German invasion of mainland Britain in WW2, and we would have done exactly the same.

What? That doesn't make any sense at all.

...But its mainly the Jesus thing and the freedom thing. Obviously, if you really believe that Jesus Christ was simultaneously the son of, and the incarnation of, a divine Being then you might find logic and fact a bit alien in the first place. The notion that Afghanistan is about our "freedom" is equally absurd. Its all geopolitics, we do what America tells us. Whenever you hear anyone talk about freedom in respect to Afghanistan they're either a politician or a ****ing moron.

It originally came on his Radio 4 report from the scene soon after the incident. I nearly swerved my car, what does a Muslim look like? Does Muhammad Ali look like Captain Hook? It was shameful reporting even if he was quoting a source.

Had your eyes and ears closed in the 70s and 80s then did you? It was no fun whatsoever being of Irish descent as a child. Frequently there were calls to kick us out - phone calls from the NF at 2AM in the morning and all sorts.

Shouldn't post on this thread without saying how disgusting wednesday's event was and how sorry I feel for his family and friends. Also nice to see the Just giving link posted by Lambretta man - hopefully something half good will come out of this.

You don't want the coppers to have to be shooting people in the street.

    That's what's horrific.

Its tolerant liberalism and human rights that is horrific, third world savagery met with summary justice is quite satisfying, well done the Met.

Having lived(part time) in Wembley, for seven years, I'd positively encourage it.

It's the coppers redeeming themselves since they knew who these twats were before it.

Serious cock ups in intelligence lead to this.
