If you had a time machine and could spirit two ex NUFC players into the present to help our fortunes next year who would you pick and why?

I'd probably look no further than Shearer and Speed.

We need a number 9 who can bang them in for fun... plus a midfielder who can score from corners...

Two good choices. I'd go further back and get Jackie Milburn and Frank Brennan.

Somebody that could bang them in, and somebody that would let no one past.

Think most people would have Shearer, and Solano was a big favourite and crowd pleaser too.

They both featured regularly on the DVD's shown on the coaches to the away games.

Shearer & Ferdinand for me, was toying with Asprilla but i think these two up front would be deadly.

The dynamic duo. They scored goals for fun and complimented each other well.

There's a great DVD out with all their goals on that they play on the coaches to the away games. Never get tired of seeing them. They just wanted the ball in the net and enjoyed it just as much when the other guy scored.

    Shearer and Woodgate.

Woodgate was the best CB I've ever seen at SJP, better than Colo for me. If it wasn't for his injuries he'd have had more England caps than both Terry & Ferdinand.

Shearer for obvious reasons, plus he is exactly the type of striker we're crying out for at the moment.

From who I saw, a sober Gazza, and from what my granddad told me when he was still alive, Hughie Gallacher. We need some entertainment after this season, and those two would offer it in spades.

Woody was real class for a CB, good defender with plenty of skill. Pity about his injury problems.

It's a difficult one and it would be easy to pick the likes of Shearer, Ferdinand, Beardsley etc, however next season when we start playing the ball on the floor and I'm sure we will, I'd love to see Scott Sellars and Andy Cole together again.

Heard this on Talksport radio a few days ago seems Beardo was the choice.

This is a great post, mind if I steal it for our Sunderland board ?
BTW, I'd pick Shearer and Ginola.

Nobby would be a good shout for set pieces. The maestro used to be able to put the ball on a sixpence.

Shearer and Speed instantly came to mind.

Certainly were, but I think Andy Cole came out on top in a goal per game ratio.

    Beardsley and Ferdinand for me.

Beardsley could create a pass from anywhere and Sir Les was, in my opinion, the most complete centre forward (not striker, which would be Shearer) I've ever seen at the club.

If we look at what we're missing on our team, we're decent at most positions except a striker and a winger. As such, the best options seems to be Beardsley and Shearer, or Ginola and Shearer.

No questions about Big Al leading the line for sure.

We've traditionally never had a great fullback so there's really no one to pick there. (Unless you're willing to consider say Olly Bernard, Andy Griffin, Warren Barton, John Beresford... any further back and I'm clueless)
