Sturridge is never 6'5"! I am and I can tell you being this tall makes a massive difference, trust me, just turning corners while it's windy is a challenge! If Sturridge were the same height he'd have less pace and no where near the same mobility as he has shown. The only tall, athletic and mobile player I can think of is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and that's because he's a martial arts expert!

No - West Ham and LFC are have already agreed terms and now it's up to the player himself to agree personal terms. The injury will have no impact.

The only thing that will probably delay the transfer is Newcastle's interest, and they will bide their time.

Sturridge is 6'0" - still pretty tall but not as big as Carroll.

Personally, I don't think height plays that big a part in anything - you naturally assume that because you are tall, you will win every header and dominate everyone who is smaller than you.

Torres was one of the best headers of the ball I have seen, along with C. Ronaldo - tbf they are about 6ft but you wouldn't associate either as being a physical powerhouse yet their timing of the jump, the power of their jump, strong neck muscles, and technical heading ability makes them far more effective.

Even Raheem Sterling has won a fair few headers this season.

Owen has out jumped many players taller than him, a lot of it is to do with the timing.

    height helps but not vital.

    would it?

I know you say 15mi but is papadopolous is 12mil, plus wages and toures is a free but again carraghers wages in all likelyhood then is Ilori 3mil?

    i don't know just asking.

    ...........................................................

also rodgers is finally being cagey... http://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/latest-news/rodgers-reveals-carroll-talks

The striker scored seven goals in 24 league appearances for Sam Allardyce's men during a season-long loan.

Rodgers told the media: "I spoke to him and we had a good chat. The boy is a talent. It's just something we need to assess between now and the end of the window.

"It was just a general conversation in terms of the experience of getting out and playing. He enjoyed that apart from the injury.

"At the start of the season the whole thing was about going and getting games because he wasn't going to be a starter here.

"We will talk again with him and the club to see how it all evolves. It's one of those situations where it will probably be resolved a lot quicker than that for both parties.

"The objective at the beginning of the season was for him to go out and play. He's gone away to think of what we spoke about and we will talk again through the weeks."

using google translator to turn manager double speak into english

"I told him i wanted him gone, he's a fat lump, i hope we get the 15mil quickly so i can buy a real player. He chuffed off cos i told him he was a bench warmer, he's a bit of a wuss that way. As soon as he agrees with west ham to go he's outa here and i can't wait"

Carroll please accept your wage reduction and **** off. You will only sit on our bench (if that) rotting away. West Ham is an opportunity for you, take it.

As long as there is NO DEAL for lfc to pay some part of his wages or some loyalty bonus considering the **** ran off to west ham for games when we needed a striker. he wanted to go so chuff him.

It makes a huge difference, the taller the forward the less balance, pace, agility and quite often, skill.

Then again, your stronger, more imposing, a more ferocious strike, good in the air etc...Peter Crouch apart of course. Other than Carroll good examples of a "Big man" are Dzeko and Lukaku.

6 foot was tall maybe 20 years ago, he's average height I think. Winning headers is all about positional sense, timing and simply getting one over your marker. As long as your clever you'll win headers all day long regardless of height.

Having played a lot of Sunday league, I relied heavily on my heading ability and use of my chest, I never had pace or any balance whatsoever, put a tall man through one on one and he'll struggle to round the keeper, relying heavily on a powerful strike instead. Trust me! Like a giraffe on a frozen lake...

  14. I think Carroll would make for a good CB partner for Agger, I doubt Andy would be particularly keen though <laugh>

good point, it says it all about a striker when people who were desperate to say something good were pointing at how he helped us from set pieces.

    now on heading.

look at crouch. he never jumped, useless in the air really and found out at stoke. crouch thought messing with it while running towards his own goal "holding it up" before laying it back to the guy who punted it at him in the first place to get some applause was playing for us... nope!!!

alan shearer is a great example of a guy who while not so tall was mighty in the air. Les ferdinand was another.

For forwards i's more about getting a run on it that being tall i think. You have to be like sturridge to get ahead of your man and take it in but for goal socring getting free is more important than being tall.

Again though your CB needs to be massive more than your forward cos thats the defensive and offensive set piece play. CBs attack a ball like fat ruddock. useless ****es but have a small purpose.... hyppia was a legned cos he was tall, and had balance and could pass... so under rated on the ball was sami. A better player at EVERYTHING than carra any day.

I'd rather pull a maureen and stick a big CB up front as plan C (terry for example was jose's go to) than own andy carroll for this purpose. give me sturridge with all his faults anyday.... give me a cisse as an option of pace or a hernandez poacher type.... HELL even wenger stuck mertesacker up top in the FA cup as a target man.

He was used as a cb at Newcastle on a semi regular basis when he was going through the youth ranks.

Also on the holding up the ball and winning headers topic; it's all about positioning. Put simply the forward should always win the header if they have good positioning and anticipation. Once they are in the right place to receive the ball then the defender can't ge there without fouling.

I'm slight build but on the occasions I have played up front I have won lots of headers for this reason. If you have some pace it helps for getting into the right place.

I usually play in defence and if you come up against a good forward you won't win anything without fouling them or playing sneaky.

I have friends who are very short who dominate in the air due to them above and also timing. Getting your jump right makes a huge difference as does technique.

    disco is right.

hyypia extended his anfield career by doing this. he got out in front of the forwards and dominated aerially. If a forward is in fornt of a defender then all the defender can do is jump with them or over them. this is why LFC defenders drive me spare. they stand off the likes of benteke and let him get in front, free and even take it down and turn with it. great defenders get in side by side or in front of forwards and just mop up headers and don't get noticed.

  18. Although I agree with those points, I was thinking more about set pieces. A defender only needs to get a touch on the ball, anywhere will do as the saying goes. That is not the case for an attacker, they have to get a good contact to be able to send it goal bound. Carroll is very good at getting his head on things but not so great at getting a good contact, I also think he is good at getting into position (so long as he doesn't have to run too far or out pace someone <laugh>) and, since he has played up front, he knows what the attacker wants to do. Plus, his long legs are a very useful weapon when it comes to defending too.

I remember this being my biggest gripe against the Spider leg Crouch! so tall but couldn't jump or get any power in his headers!

Still he was a better player than Carroll!
