I don't know who's point is more ridiculous. Waddle claiming he wouldn't be in the top 1000 premier league players or you claiming Beckham is one of the top 10 modern greats. He's not even in the top 10 wingers of the last 15 years, let alone the top 10 modern greats.

I can help you with this one.

The latter is more ridiculous, in all honesty.

When I read the title I thought Waddler had said "penalty" instead of "pelanty".

I'd have Beckham in our squad even now, in a heartbeat.

If only for the shirt sales, the publicity, or - oh - the killer right foot and work effort.

    You seeing this Larsson?

If I am picking an England team from the past 40 years I've been interested in such matters (1974 was the first world cup I watched as a 10 year old with real interest), then Beckham is in it without fail imo. He wouldn't be captain as Bryan Robson would be.

The Beardsley/Lineker partnership is the best I've ever seen at International level for England mate which is why I went for them instead of just 2 top players. They were telepathic in their understanding and complimented each other like no others I've seen in those 40 years. I've picked Dave Watson over Butcher as Butcher is a ****ing fruit cake and Watson one of the most underrated defenders since the war.

As I have now slept on it, I'm changing my original line up and putting in Des Walker alongside Tony Adams as Walker had bags of pace to go with Adams 'thou shalt not pass' style of defending and would compliment each other as well. Walker is probably the best footballing defender I've seen in my time and makes Rio Ferdinand look like Steve Hetzke?

We debated this for some time last night, the only other forwards we could come up with were keegan & owen, no other suggestions for other positions, gerrard was mentioned and quashed as was ferdinand

Lineker is so far ahead of any other English player in the last 40 years (as world class striker) its frightening mate. He would have walked into ANY other national side in his hey day inc Brazil imo, as he was the best 'big game' player I've ever seen.

He was and is the best striker (not footballer) I've ever seen play the game for England and you'd bang your entire years salary on him scoring in the 6 yard box. Poacher extraordinaire and a cool cat in front of goal. Beardsley just bought into that ability and as a sublime footballer (not striker) he was the perfect foil.

As a partnership, it was 10/10.

Its all about partnerships kidda. Beardsley was happy top be the support act and was (next to Gazza) the most gifted footballer I've seen play for England and that combination was incredible.

Shearer was a terrific player too but its not about putting the best 2 strikers together its about partnerships. Beardsley and Lineker have never been bettered imo and were that good I'd have had them in my 66 squad too?

    Decent team Cest!

I'd obviously have Scholes ahead of Chump Waddle (I'd have a lot of players ahead of him) as he's the best player England has produced ever for me :)

I'd also have Ashley Cole in for Psycho, probably for purely footballing reasons. IMO Cole is the only player who would get near a world 11 side from our country since Gerrard retired in 2005.

Beckham is always going to be a legend at United. Stepped up in 99 when our two best players were suspended for the CL final.

Waddle is a Jealous, bitter, fat, scruffy, drunken loser.

I havent got Waddle anywhere near my training ground kidda. Decent club player but shocking international player.

I had Pearce in as I just love his mental toughness and desire to win. Cole is a better footballer but he isn't even close to becoming the fearsome defender Pearce was. Football is a game won by winners and those with strong mental toughness and its why, imo, SAF never fancied Cole but did want Pearce at Utd.

I'd take a team of Stuart Pearce's over a team of Ashley Coles anyday mate.
