The even ones have either the European Championship or the World Cup to occupy us.Once the Crystal Palace v Watford play off is over this year it's ten weeks of football less - or free depending on your viewpoint - time to be occupied. In an attempt to stem the boredom I have bougnt a 1958 MG Magnette in two tone grey, actually it's three tone to be perfectly honest the third colour being a nice shade of ferrus oxide. So now I will disappear into the garage for whatever the summer equivalent of hibernation is. The fact that the last owner gave up after eight years doesn't bode well but, fortified by gallons of Nescafe and with ne'er a ball being kicked as a distraction I hope to emerge in early August with a driveable classic.
Ok, my skills with a 1958 nag are probably better than with a 2013 digital camera, but I will enlist the help of the boy! (Well 24 tomorrow so strictly speaking a man)
Sounds good CT. I love old motors. I restored a 1978 renault gordini turbo just before I had kids. Had kids then sold it as never had time to drive it on the weekends. This year during the close season my target is to lay a patio of sorts and install a hot tub in my garden! I would love and indoor swimming pool but cant quite stretch to that yet.
I originally saw this car on E bay back in January and when I phoned the seller he had just sold it.Then it reappeared last month,by which time it had moved to Wales. The new owner clearly underestimated the problems with the ever present tinworm. These cars were built with a lower and an upper floor separated by cross members. Water seemed to find it's way in between the two sections but not out, consequently they rusted badly.90% of this model ended up on stock car tracks back in the 70's. I prevailed upon my brother to use his Volvo Estate to trailer it back for me.(My first job in Wales was to find the red button Norwich 2 Reading1) A friend does lots of welding for MOT and he took a look at this and declared it to be "not too bad". The upside is the mechanics are about as complicated as a wheelbarrow.the 1.5litre "B" series BMC engine is sturdy and reliable-a version is used as a marine diesel.Twin SU carburretors give 68bhp in a car weighing a ton and a quarter,in it's day 90mph made it a good sports saloon but acceleration falls short of being startling.
