Hi Pn, a few questions if you have the time. Obviously it's not nice, but what does slipped foal mean? When STS is covering 5 mares in a day, does the pregnancy success rate drop after each 'session'? And finally this may be a stupid question but looking through the list of mares i noticed a few oaks winners. Has a colt born to both a derby winner and oaks winner ever won the derby? Thanks in advance. edit. Maybe this should of been in the ask PN thread? please move it if so Ron. all linked to STS though.
"Slipped foal" is the term used for a late term miscarriage, usually used if the mare has been pregnant for 8 months or more of the 11 month gestation period. I believe there has been some research done to suggest that large books of mares do not affect fertility. The main problem is likely to be loss of libido, many stallions simply get bored of the routine and start to show little interest in covering mares. A break is usually all that is needed to bring them back round. Off the top of my head I can't think of any Derby winners by Derby winners and out of Oaks winners. The closest is probably SIXTIES ICON (by Galileo and out of Love Divine) who won the St Leger. As you can see above, his 3/4 brother is in training with Sir Henry!
I think to the racing public there has never been a Derby winner by a Derby winner out of an 'actual' Oaks winner. However officially Lammtarra by Nijinsky (1970 Derby winner) out of Snow Bride (1989 Oaks winner) is the only one. But Snow Bride only got the race weeks later on the disqualification of Aliysa for prohibited substances. So by the book LAMMTARRA is by a Derby winner out of an Oaks winner. Statistically it's not surprising I suppose. A mare on average may have 10 live foals and not many of them will be by Derby winners. They then have to run against several thousand other foals from their year of birth. .
Three of Sea the Stars progeny are catalogued to sell at the Arqana Breeze Up Sale on 11/12 May. As far as I am aware they are the only three to pass through a breeze up sale: Lot 13 SALMARGO colt out of Navajo Moon (cost â¬200,000 as a yearling) Lot 48 colt out of Straight Lass (failed to sell at â¬110,000 as a yearling) Lot 59 filly out of Uimhir A Haon (cost â¬150,000 as a yearling)
The EBN are doing their First Season Sire breakdown's and today's is Sea The Stars. I have copied their piece below and will update the names/trainers of his 2yos in due course: SEA THE STARS Cape Cross â Urban Sea (Miswaki) Stands at Gilltown Stud: 2013 fee â¬85,000 The worldâs highest-rated racehorse of 2009, Sea The Stars, who had ended his juvenile season with a Gr.2 victory, had six outings at the highest level and won them all. He started over a mile in the 2,000 Guineas before stepping up to middle distances, collecting the Derby, Eclipse Stakes, Juddmonte International, Irish Champion Stakes and finally the Prix de lârc de Triomphe, in which he did not get the clearest of runs but weaved his way through rivals to score with much more in hand than the official two-length margin. He is much the best son of his sire Cape Cross and is one of eight black-type winners out of his Gr.1-winning dam Urban Sea (Miswaki), from a family that has great strength in depth. She is the dam of the dual Gr.1 Derby winner and Champion Sire Galileo, dual Gr.1 winner Black Sam Bellamy (sire of a Gr.1 winner), US Gr.1 victrix My Typhoon and the Classic-placed trio Melikah (dam of a Gr.2 winner), All Too Beautiful (dam of the dual Classicplaced Wonder Of Wonders) and Rathaskerâs first season sire Born To Sea. Under his second dam are Classic/Gr.1 winners and sires Kingâs Best, Anabaa Blue, Anzillero and Tamayuz, and there are more under his third dam, namely Adlerflug and the Australian Azzurro. Of his first crop of 118 two-year-olds, produced off a covering fee of â¬85,000, 42 were sold or bought in at public auction last year, realising an average of 233,844gns/â¬294,643 and a median of 164,365gns/â¬207,100. Unsurprisingly, almost all of them made at least six-figures â even the âcheapestâ fetched â¬80,000. The top price was the â¬1.2m paid by Mandore International for his grey son out of the French Gr.1 winner Alpine Rose, a full-sister to four other Group and/or Listed winners. A colt out of Fame And Gloryâs full-sister Yummy Mummy was knocked down to David Redvers for 575,000gns, Shadwell Estate paid 550,000gns for a half-brother to Gr.1 winner Allegretto out of Gr.3 winner Alleluia, and McCalmont Bloodstock paid a round 500,000gns for a half-brother to dual Gr.1 Classic winner Finsceal Beo and Gr.2 Classic winner Frozen Power out of Musical Treat. From an understandably top-class book of mares, he also has two-year-olds out of Gr.1 winners Albanova, Casual Look, Evaâs Request, Love Divine, Magical Romance, Mrs Lindsay, Nebraska Tornado, Queenâs Logic, Red Bloom, Vodka and Zarkava, along with halfsiblings to Gr.1 winners out of Affianced (dam of Soldier Of Fortune), Ange Blue (Angara), Anna Amalia (Ave), Asmara (Azamour), Behkara (Behkabad), Bordighera (Grandera and George Washington), Bourbonella (Aqlaam), Daneleta (Intense Focus), Darinska (Darjina), Drifa (De Sica), Exciting Times (Gorella), Hill Of Snow (Preseli), Kalamba (Kalanisi), Maid Of Killeen (Indian Ink), Marie Rheinberg (Le Havre), Mintly Fresh (Manighar), Model Queen (Regal Parade), Mrs Marsh (Canford Cliffs), Multicolour Wave (Elusive Wave), Sadima (Youmzain and Creachadoir), Sopran Londa (Cima De Triomphe), Specifically (Speciosa), Starlight Dreams (Mastercraftsman), Straight Lass (Naaqoos), Vadaza (Vadawina) and Zarkasha (Zarkava). Sea The Starsâs first crop include 14 two-year-olds out of mares by the multiple Champion Sadlerâs Wells, along with another seven out of mares by his sons. Two of these are out of Galileo mares, their progeny showing not only 2x3 inbreeding to Urban Sea but also 4x4 to Danzig. There are also ten Sea The Stars juveniles out of Danehill mares and three out of mares by sons of Danehill.
