Loads of press reports after the Bookies slashed the odds on Gus Poyet taking over :

"Poyet is considering his position following the club’s play-off defeat to Crystal Palace – the Uruguayan running out of patience with what he believes to be a lack of financial support from his board. He met his squad yesterday to tell them he could offer no guarantees whether he was going to extend his 3½-year spell in Sussex.

The 45-year-old has become increasingly frustrated at the Amex Stadium over the size of his budget and is convinced he has taken the Championship club as far as he can. And now Poyet, who rejected the chance to take charge of Reading in March, is expected to be considered by Fulham if they lose faith in Jol.

Fulham’s board are understood to be seriously concerned at their dismal end to the season, during which the team have suffered five defeats in a row and narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship.

Jol agreed a one-year contract extension earlier this year but results and performances have been alarming and Fulham will review his position after the game at Swansea on Sunday. Jol’s tenure has also been blighted with persistent rumours of fallouts with players and he has endured a fractious relationship with chief executive Alistair Mackintosh."

Always one for co-incidence, it was 8 years ago to the day, 15th May 2003, that we appointed Chris Coleman -

"Fulham will today announce that Chris Coleman has been appointed Manager of the Club's First Team.

Academy Director and Reserve Team coach Steve Kean will be promoted to the position of Assistant Manager.

The decision for Chris' appointment was made by the Club's Chairman Mohamed Al Fayed."

Very interesting but the article is flawed as we are a club running on tight budget and potentially Poyet will face similar challenges. It is promotion for him managing a PL club but ...

If we were in the market for a manager, Poyet would be an excellent choice. But I don't think we will - or should - replace Jol this summer.

Honestly, I think we are in a "back him or sack him" situation now.

Jol was not given much/any money to work with back in January. Our end to the season is the inevitable result of losing key players and not being able to replace them. This summer the board either needs to give Jol the £10-15m he needs to replace players like Dembele, or get in a manager whom they are happy to give that money too. Botching our way down the middle of that equation (by keeping Jol and giving him no money) will not have a good result for us.

I am sure that Jol is capable of delivering the team we want if we back him and I very much want him to stay. Even his loan signings have been pretty good (Riether and Enoh especially). But if there is doubt at the top, we have to address that now.

Poyet would be a good choice should we decide to split.

Whoever is in charge next season will have my full support (although I would prefer we back Jol in the Summer, as Surly says).

On reflection I don't see that changing manager will do very much good. The squad is still wafer-thin and lacking in quality in various areas.

I quite agree Bidley. Our problems are with the squad, its strengths, weaknesses and compatibility, which prior to DD's leaving was much better.
I have read that Sidwell has been involved with all our successful games this season and we have under performed when he has not been playing, which would lead us to believe he is an asset for the future.
I'd hope we can add strength where we need it and move on with what I believe is a good manager, which many PL teams would love to have.

Thomas Schaff manager of Werder Bremen has left after 14 years. One for Jol ??

    Just thinking out loud.

Getting rid of Jol would be a mistake IMO, you lost three of your best/influential players last summer, two of which were at the tail end of August, giving Jol no time to find the right replacements. Give him another year at least.

Surlyc has said everything for me. We lost our two best players for good money and Danny Murphy who I think was missed more than I'd like to admit.

Jol has done a good job on a shoestring budget and you don't get away with it all the time.

He needs some backing this time round and a fair crack of the whip.

    This is an interesting article:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/may/15/martin-jol-fulham-gus-poyet

It has been amended since it first appeared this morning with the first paragraph being added late this afternoon.

Personally, I'd like to see him stay, but if the board won't back him and are unhappy with our slide since april and he goes I think Gus would be a good man to take over, he plays football the right way, or seems to. Unless of course Rafa fancies carrying on a bit further down the District Line. I'd love him to take over but know that will never happen.

    Brighton have suspended Gus Poyet.

"Poyet, the Brighton manager, was informed on Thursday that he must stay away from the Championship club as they conduct an internal investigation into an alleged breach of contract, with his comments in the aftermath of the play-off defeat to Crystal Palace believed to be under scrutiny.

The Uruguayan had been considering his future after Monday's home defeat and told his players that he could offer no guarantees whether he was set to stay on but Brighton's board have taken the extraordinary step of suspending him with immediate effect."

In other stories, Brighton are said to be looking for £2.5m compensation from anyone taking him on.

This doesn't necessarily mean that its us who have turned his head. He could just as easily be thinking of the Everton job. I just hope that if he does leave Brighton that doesn't prompt our board to ditch Jol rather than risk Poyet getting his feet under someone else's table. As I said before, I think he'd be a good appointment, but I think we'll do better sticking with Jol. I'll put my tin helmet on now, as I'm sure there are going to be others who disagree with that!

Not from me. I agree. Poyet is a good manager at the levels he has been operating at but is untried in the Premiership whereas Jol is a Premier quality manager, there's not much doubt about that. Changing would be a punt and we really have no need to change as long as Jol doesn't feel he is being forced out, of course.

Thinking back MAF does have a track record of falling out with managers quite quickly and when he does they leave equally quickly. Tigana, Hodgson, Hughes all got a bad press from him when they left in some way or another and it was quite clear he was getting disaffected with them in their last days with the club.

To be fair, the only thing Hodgson did 'wrong' was decide to leave. His quick exit was the cause of friction with Al Fayed rather than a result of it.

I've said it before, but if we change managers our problems remain; a threadbare, mish-mash squad. And I doubt Poyet is a bigger draw for players than Jol.
