He was a rock at the back, and as COR says, he has done extremely well at Cheltenham, contributing to a very good defensive record. Arguably Rovers' best defender of the last 10 or so years as he was very consistent and prevented us from losing some games, a truly excellent player who deserved his promotion with us. He wasd my favourite player while he was with us and I guess being over 30 was the reason why Trollope let him go, but we could have done him since.
He was playing some of his best football when he left us. I had a lot of time for Trollope but his main error when he released some players was that he overlooked their contribution to the team over and above on the field. Elliott deserved to stay on his performances alone, but he also was a great player for the team. Hinton was another. In his case he wasn't quite as good on the field, but his presence in the squad was worth so much. When it came down to it I think Elliott wanted a two year contract and we were only prepared to give him one year.
Elliott is another player like Phillips that I agreed with letting go at the time. He was a great defender while we were in League 2. But my opinion is he lost the pace that we needed in League 1. Several games showed his lack of pace hurt us. Just like Richard Walker, he was great up front scored many goals in our promotion season but he couldnt handle League 1 and he really struggled. Elliott didnt struggle as much as Walker but Trollope thought more pace was needed and I agreed. What hurt us though is that we didnt replace the leadership qualities and experience that he had. We didnt replace the fight and passion that he showed. We failed to replace him with someone who was as good as him. We lost a lot of players around the same time who had the Rovers mentality and replaced them with overpaid crap players. We definately missed Elliott. He is definately a player who we shouldnt have let go and in hindsight, I was wrong to agree with allowing Elliott to leave.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing. I recall many a Gashead backing the decision to let Elliott go. I was not one. SE was the foundation of the team and we were always going to have a massive hole to fill. He's gone on to be a big part of Cheltenhams promotion challenge over the last few seasons. Unfortunately for them they always bottle it at the playoffs. That aside I can't blame Trolls, he thought he was doing the right thing building a team capable of challenging in League 1.
Elliott should never have been let go and it still ****s me off to this day Rickie Lambert should not have been sold for such a pittance and that also ****s me off to this day Phillips was a decent keeper, and a great bloke but I do feel he wasn't good enough for a serious league one team. The difference is we were never serious about making a promotion attempt so for our needs he was definately good enough and shouldn't have been let go. Yet another thing that ****s me off Disley should have stayed as we replaced him with a load of ****e ultimately. That ****s me off
100% agree with that! (except the there/they're part!) If we (please god!) have a successful season next term, this current lot will go a long way to cementing their own legendary status.
Are you getting all frustrated on that Candy Rush game. A serious league one team, so serious you dropped down a league
