HULL CITY FAN IN PEACE. Very Well Done on yesterday. Good game with a superb ending. The last 3 weekends have seen fantastic action. Good Luck in the Final. Fingers crossed that you make it and the top 3 championship clubs in 2012/13 GO UP.!!!
January 1960: Little old Watford of the 4th division take on the big city team Birmingham of the 1st division in the FA Cup. 33,000+ packed the ground, including a very excited teenager stood in the middle of the swaying mass on the Vicarage Road terrace. Things were going well for the team managed by Ron Burgess, well some said it was actually the captain who organised training and picked the team, and eventually we would finish the season with promotion. There was huge expectation that we might just topple one of the big clubs, although most were hoping for a respectable showing with no large defeat. It actually came to pass that goals from Holton and Uphill, the Watford goal scoring machine, would be enough to see us home by two goals to one. The tension as we withstood wave after wave of attack was almost unbearable, but we did hold on for a victory that became part of Watford folklore. 53 years later and another game that will not be forgotten by those who witnessed it, including someone who came out of his teenage years a while ago. Hope I am not expected to wait as long again.
I stood at that Brum game pressed against the railings around the old dog track at the Rookery End in awe of Holton's power and subtlety - great day. I would suggest that we have had one or two games that come close to yesterday's without quite matching it for tension and last minute drama. The Southampton League Cup tie is one that I (and I suspect the other 92,000 supposedly crammed into Vicarage Road that 1980 night) will never forget. Imagine being 6-1 up in extra time and knowing that a second Saints goal would dump us out of the cup. Cue Poskett's second and a roar of relief. Still got the commemorative ball-point pen. Wonder what little trinket will be produced by the club for yesterday's game?
The Walsall 4-4 game was obviously a big one but also playing Bolton when we were 3 down and won 4-3 spring to mind. Nothing comes close to Sunday of course but then it's hard to think of many games that have had quite as spectacular an ending.
For the sheer speed of changing emotional states nothing can compare with the end of Sunday's game but for a sustained period of total disbelief I would go for the Southampton game. I was at that one, though, which makes a difference. I don't even want to think of what Leicester fans must have gone through. The nearest I can think of was watching us lose to Northwich Victoria surrounded by their fans holding candles because we didn't think that the Vics' floodlights were good enough.
Thanks Sweet thing - I'd back you for the final on what I've seen of both teams this season - think you have more 'big game players' ...
i don't know...though we haven't lost to CP this season, i think they have more experience of the bigger games...it's going to be a tough one to call, but if we play like we played on Sunday, we have every chance..
Beware - I knew a guy who did that once. Set himself up in a suitable spot and had just bent over to pick up his bait tin when he saw his wallet slip out of his pocket and into the water. Before he could reach it, a carp appeared from nowhere, snatched it and took off. Standing there with his lower jaw hanging down, he was even more flabbergasted when four more carp suddenly popped up on the surface & all five fish stood on their tails on the surfacer and started throwing his wallet to each other. Amazed, he turned to another fisherman nearby and said "Can you believe that?" The guy answered "Nothing unusual - everywhere around here has carp to carp walleting." I'll get me coat.......
Likewise - excellent post emiatss. In a vaguely similar vein, I read a great blog post today related our game by a Stoke fan - another perspective to bring yet another smile to my face - http://www.footyplace.com/features/readers-blogs-deeney-goal-summed-up-joy-of-football
.... these boilies taste like **** ... think it's going to take me a while to get the hang of this ... although still preferring it to football at the moment.
