Morning gents, I've been tracking the forum for the best part of two years now while I've been abroad as my source of City news and updates. Its just over a week since I stopped pacing a Canadian balcony at 7am while we made history (again) and I've finally calmed down enough to post with some sensibility for the summer ahead. Today's sky paper talk links us with a £4m attempt for Jordan Rhodes, at that price, I'd say snap him up - a month ago I'd of said £8-10m to the likes of Everton, Scumderland or Villa (providing the latter two stayed up) would have been a more realistic bet. But at £4m, perhaps with a wage reduction clause should we go down again would be a smarter move. What do we think? This is starting to look a good piece of business (providing the tabloids have some substance behind them).
On another note I see Nakhi Wells is linked with a Palarse/Bournemouth move at £600k... He's not going to set the prem alight this year but at that price is he a striker worth placing a bet on the future with? Brucie has to take a big amount of credit for what he did with the likes of Welbeck as a raw youngster - could Wells be an investment worth backing through what could be our 'yo-yo' next couple of years?

Thank you Paul Duffen. It is people like you who bring clubs to there knees. :emoticon-0105-wink:

Yes. After Brighton made a right royal mess of the play-offs Liam Bridcutt would be steal on a FAT. We need to replace both Mckenna and Olifinjana and imo Bridcutt and McGugan (on fats) would be massive upgrades. Maybe
Boyd can have a word with Bridcutt when Scotland meet up soon. :emoticon-0100-smile

Sadly, Rhodes is on £42k a week and is nowhere near worth what Blackburn pay him. Even on a small transfer fee do we want to waste that amount of money on a player who has yet to play at PL level. I would rather that money was spent on trying to get say GK-Shay Given. Someone who is proven in the PL but has points to prove still. Sat on the Villa bench for 2 years has been such a waste of a great talent.

Will you please use the term FAT a little more often, it's not getting nearly enough of an outing on here...

Perhaps, but that's not to say he can't have his head turned to common sense. I'd prefer to see no player on more than £25k... £30k at the very tops for next season, and anything above £15k a week would need a relegation clause put in, but Rhodes only needs to look at Jon Stead who made an almost identical move the year we got out of div 3 and his career was crippled by it. It's unlikely I know, but I wouldn't rule out something along the lines of a £25k a week package with a yearly survival wage increase put in along with the relegation clause. He's clearly settled in the north and I'd go as far as assuming he still resides around Huddersfield. Not to mention that it doesn't take an idiot to see Blackburn are a sinking ship under the Venky's. Saying that, IF we did sign him I wouldn't expect him to stick around much more than 2 years and Le Fondre is still my biggest hope in the striker recruiting lists. I can agree on Given, but only if a young understudy is brought in to learn from him so were not left in the same situation when he eventually retires in the next couple of years.

On Humbersides sportstalk last night they had Burnleys match reporter on and he says that Austin wont break the Hull City bank at all and with only one year left on his contract he wont cost much more than £4-5m. So will a goal scoring record similar to Rhodes, Austin offers a much better investment.

My only issue with Austin is I don't know if he's that good.

I know he scores a lot but it seems to be in bursts and then he goes quiet again for months.

I can't really remember ever being impressed with him at a game. If SB wants him I'd trust his judgement but I'm not totally convinced yet.

Completely agree, scored out of his arse with Howe as manager when the system fitted around him, fizzed out (albeit with an injury) under Dyche. I'd take him with us, but he wouldn't be the striker I'd be fitting my system around.

Rhodes wants to test himself in the premier league, as a young lad and having just had a year on 40k a week, he's more than rich enough for the foreseeable future.

I'm 100% certain he'd take a pay cut if it meant him getting to play in the premier league. It's the right move for his career and should we bid, I'm sure his close family and friends would all say the same thing.

A good season in the premier league and he'll be sorted on 40k a week for the rest of his soccer days.

Does anyone actually know he is on £40k a week?

I seriously doubt he is on much more than half that. He would have been on £6-7k at Huddersfield I presume.

The £40k weekly wage is peddled about like everyone has seen his payslip

It was widely reported at the time of the transfer that he'd signed for a £2,100,000 annual salary, which works out around 40k p/w.

Matt Mills on £25-30k a week, Rhodes on £40-45k a week, once you get daft owners willing to spunk some cash, you end up with some seriously ridiculous deals.

For the money he would cost playing Austin in bursts would be ok as we also have Aluko and Fryatt in the squad at the very least.

If that is what it takes,, Yes.

I wonder if Uncle Steve Agnew has had a word in his shell like ??

Its £42K and has been reported many times. Swanny who knows the Rhodes family confirmed it in his HDM piece last week.
