Tory government sells off majority of council housing stock in 80s, councils have no or little money to invest in new stock and have growing waiting lists for what is available, they put people in the only housing that is available and those people get ****ed for having more than one bedroom even though it was the only housing option they could get from the council.

And people on here blame the tenants for having more than one bedroom and say they deserve to have their benefits cut!

Whenever did this country change from one of compassion and trying to be a decent human being to one full of complete ****ers?

"Her son said she was distraught at having to leave the home she had lived in for 18 years, where she had raised two children as a single mother."

Human decency - learn some <ok>

As an extension of what I just said - one of the reasons for my rightward leaning views despite having benefited from the system is the amount of abuse of benefits that was all around me - some people to this day (a few that are a very close to me) are absolutely ****ing the system. It is not 1 or 2, it's about half the people I know well enough from my estate, almost everyone is 'single' parent despite not actually being single, 70% of the kids in the area are on free school dinners which means their parents are not working (source) when most of them are, social landlords buy properties which they rent twice (the government pays once for the single man, who actually lives with his 'single' wife in another social property, and they split the rent between them, while the landlord also rents out the property to a genuine tennant), about 1/4 of people are on DLA (I know a fella who was dipping his hands in diesel to make them swell...) - and then you should see all the mental schemes to get free electricity and gas from hacked meters.

This is not me reading the Daily Mail, it's empirical experience. I am close to some people who are up to all sorts of shenanigans - and it is true that they might struggle to maintain a decent standard of living if they didn't behave as they do - but on the other hand if there wasn't a system, which acted like a giant Pinata in which everyone gets a stick to beat the thing with, then maybe people would have been motivated to get off their arses and make their own way in life.

    <applause>

If the Tory ****s didn't move all the council houses into the private market in the 80s there would be far more homes available

And if a government is willing to tax you, make you follow their rules and force nearly one million people along to food banks the very least they can do is let you stay in your home

And what does this have to do with the woman who committed suicide? Was she one of the people you're referring to in this post?

So the Tories allowing people to own the houses that they had lived in for 10/20/30 years, thus in turn, creating wealth for those individuals, means that there is less houses available now?

Now, I'm no biologist, but how does this mean that there is less houses available now? Surely it means that there is/would be exactly the same amount of houses available.

We're talking about social housing. The Tories sold off the housing stock and most of the money went to central Government rather than to the councils, hence there was no money to invest in new social housing stock.

That's why the country is in the mess it is today. Well done Maggie.

If you have 10 council houses and sell off 5 to private ownership....how many council houses do you have left?

So there would be exactly the same amount of houses available now.

Oh right, if the councils got the money, they would've invested in building new houses....

If you have 10 tenants living in 10 homes, and 5 tenants buy their homes, in turn amassing themselves a 6 figure sum in personal wealth, how many homes are available for some random person to live in?

Its utter bollocks that there is a housing shortage.

There are **** loads of affordable houses which have been bought up by housing associations to rent out to council tenants. Loads sat empty. There are also loads of part buy houses owned by housing associations where a tenant on a low income can buy 25% of the property and pay rent on the other 75%.

There are **** loads of private landlords that rent out their properties to council tenants at a low rate but get a guaranteed income. Also there are loads of landlords that accept people on housing benefit. though the money is paid to the person not direct to the landlord. Which is why i dont accept people on benefits into any of my properties.

Every new development built these days there has to be affordable housing within the development, no ****er ever buys them. Also it is the worst thing they have ever done as it devalues the normal houses on the developments.
