I'd never this before, but this is Hull Town Hall, it was apparently only up for 40 years, before being demolished to make way for the Guildhall... please log in to view this image
They extended the the Town Hall (to become the new Guildhall) and then the same Architect decided it didn't match so the 'front' end was demolished and the Guildhall front as it is now added.
The front is actually on Lowgate, where the Guildhall entrance is now, but Alfred Gelder St runs down the side.
Courtesy of wiki... The new Town Hall was designed by Cuthbert Brodrick (the designer of Leeds Town Hall) and was opened in 1866. Shortly after, Kingston upon Hull was granted city status in 1897 and a larger building was sought. Land to the west of the Town Hall was bought as foundations for the present Guildhall which began with law courts, a council camber and offices and was completed in 1907. The Town Hall was demolished and the east end of the building, front Lowgate, was built during 1913-1916. The name Guildhall was restored. The Guildhall was designed by Sir Edwin Cooper.
imagine if we had been made a City in the late 80s . . the council would have still knocked it down and built a shiney Yellow and red brick facade in its place .. What makes me so sure ?? Imperial Hotel (portland ? on paragon st) . . .done one Jameson Street (old HDM and more) . . done one Queens Hall . . .Done one Carr Lane (now primark) . . . done one George Street (college bldgs next to Pozition) . . . all done one HRI - (prospect st) . . .Done one
It seems like Lowgate as a road doesn't exist there. It looks like one of those Italian pedestrian squares.
What do you mean done one? Most of those are still here. In fact I'm pretty sure I'm typing this from one of them. Are you talking about something in particular that used to be at those sites?
Hard to believe some of these were demolished. Queens Hall... please log in to view this image Tha Mail Buildings... please log in to view this image Hull Royal Infirmary(though as far as I'm aware, the Luftwaffe were responsible for this one)... please log in to view this image
Before they built that monstrosity you're sat in, Carr Lane looked like this... please log in to view this image
Hull RI on Prospect Street was demolished to make way for the Prospect Centre and if you'd ever had the 'pleasure' to visit someone in there you wouldn't want to go back. Seem to vaguely recall the state of the Imperial Hotel and the Tivoli next door on Paragen Street as a very young lad and they were in a right fooking state. The HDM building on Jameson Street was ok but the shops nearest Fletchers were not of any real architectural merit - the Mail obviously needed to move to better premises and therefore sold off the Mail Buildings along with their neighbours for redevelopment - thats how it goes sometimes. As for Primark/Allders/Willis Ludlow, the old Willis's building and other ramshackle buildings on Carr Lane were depressing...
It's easier to see the direction on this one... please log in to view this image This is looking towards the centre, when the Wilberforce Memorial was outside the dock office(Maritime Museum).
I ate my first Burger and drank my first milkshake in the Wimpy Bar. Waitress service. Very Posh. I love the nostalgia threads.
Some great pictures of which I am highly interested in, I have some old history books of Hull and I could weep with what has been demolished via the Luftwaffe or self inflicted demolition. Hull was indeed a classy place, streets like Coltman Street were very posh and Boulevard was very upmarket. When the trams were running Hull looked so elegant, of course there were the slums of Hessle Road and other areas but overall some fine buildings have gone as these pictures show. Thanks Lambrettaman.
Chapletown in Leeds was once a classy area before the Jews moved out to Alwoodley - places change some for the better others not..
