You can buy success, Dave Whelan has just done so. This isn't some sort of rags to riches story, they have been subsidised by a rich benefactor.

To a certain extent every successful club buys its success. I believe St.G was referring to the relative outlays from either club. Man City have clearly brought in the necessarily extremely expensive personnel and come away from this season with no silverware, bar the Community Shield. Wigan's team cost £11 million. There is a difference.
 
They are run on exactly the same model, its just that Whelan's pockets aren't as deep. I fail to see how Nicola can learn from this, which was a phrase used on the op.

Man city were an established top flight club that a billionaire took to another level. Wigan were a 4 th division club that a millionaire took to another level, how can people hate one and not the other. If man c bought trophies then Wigan bought premiership football in exactly the same way

Oh they were there. My wife is also over the moon and if ever theree was a night when, well, you know ...... boolox I landed about 2 hours ago in Minneapolis. Missed it all as well.

With respect - this is still a rags to riches story by virtue of climbing out of the 4th Division with someone with money and love for the game - I fail to see the difference between ML coming in during of hour of need and lifting us into the EPL and what has happened to Wigan. I certainly do not think we are a Man City if we follow your criteria. I think us, like Wigan, have a right to be proud of what has been achieved and I certainly have more respect for teams like us - than I will ever have for Man City.
 
Chuffed for Wigan, and especially wee Sean Maloney - he went to the same boys club team as my son. And taxi for Mancini !

You old globetrotter, you. That's what you get for swanning around the world! As I posted a while ago, I missed an FA Cup Final because of a delay when trying to fly home. I had a ticket and everything. The year was 1976.

Delighted for Wigan fans, but also that, if only perhaps for a brief moment, the old pot has been won by a club for whom it really matters. Like St G I was "chuffed" (have you been listening to Jay Rodriguez interviews?) or perhaps after my years on Merseyside I should say "made up". Oh, and can we buy the MOM please? He was terrifying, and a scouser to keep Ricky company.
 
I had to laugh when Roy Keane said that Man City need to invest, that they didn't have the talent out there today. It just shows how useless these so called 'experts' are.

The fact is that none of the Wigan players would have got into that Man City side. But team work and desire can be more successful than 11 highly paid mercenaries. Lord Duckhunter says that you can buy success well you can't. You can buy good players but you can't buy success.

Why?

Whelan has done a Man City to a 4th Division club. Just because he hasn't got the money to take them as far as Man C owners have done, doesn't make the principle any different.

Don't even get me started on these so called 'experts'. From the first day I heard Andy Townsend as a pundit/commentator I have wondered how he actually gets paid for it. If anything he has got worse over time and yesterday was testament to this!

What would you call a team of players that are going down , performed terribly against Swansea and then beat the 2nd best team in England 4 days later. Mercenaries does spring to mind. They didn't sign for Wigan for the glory or the history, they signed for the money exactly the same as the City players.

Has Dave Whelan not bought success, or are Wigan successful on the back of their youth policy and revenuer from the paying public? It's hard to think of a better example of buying success than Wigan's rise through the leagues, everybody cites Manchester City and Chelsea, but Fulham and Wigan also have to be included.
