Those excluding Revie are completely overlooking the then-unheard-of practices he employed that would now be considered standard.

He changed the game for the better. alex ferguson never did that but somehow makes the list and is being clamoured over.

Wouldn't disagree - but I also think he was incredibly lucky - if it hadn't been for the dislocated shoulder injury to Bryan Robson and the sending off of Ray Wilkins in the 1986 World Cup he wouldn't have played that young feller Lineker and 'Wor' Peter Beardsley against Poland and we would have been out of that World Cup and he would not have then been in charge for Italia 90. Just saying like.

Truth must hurt thats why you have deliberately come out with lies proven false in court.

Maybe you should try the truth then you wouldn't look such a knob

Didn't like the way his Leeds played but have to give credit to Revie - for a decade or so he had Leeds alongside Liverpool dominating the English league. Only won the first division twice though so not sure where I would place him overall. Also to be fair I think Revie jumped from the England job as he knew the knives were out for him - the money he was paid just helped !!

Don't great managers also need luck on their side ? Sir Matt Busby was once turned down for the job of manager at Liverpool - had he been accepted a great deal of football history would have turned out differently. Sometimes I think we're not just talking about great managers but rather combinations of circumstances - would Graham Taylor have achieved the same without the very special relationship to Elton John ? Why was Dave Bassett a King at Wimbledon and then a clown at Watford ? And would Sir Alex have lasted 26 years at Chelsea ? So I think we're talking more about magic combinations rather than individuals. Would Bob Paisley have appeared on the list without the work of Shankly before him ? Ironically Liverpool's most successfull manager in terms of win-loss ratio was Joe ***an. One manager who hasn't received any mention so far (He was actually just outside my original list) was Bertie Mee - who couldn't help having the aura of a Sunday School teacher but was a great manager nonetheless, and who, despite having won the double with Arsenal was not so full of ego as to prevent him being highly instrumental in Watford's early rise.

I know nothing about that game so cannot see how I could sign a petition on it - would not surprise me if the ref was biased but would also not surprise me to find 100 other examples - where do you start / stop in revising history. Let it go and get promoted and win a new one :)

Totally agree- a one club man, barring his early stint with Wimbledon, and totally devoted to bringing on youngsters, and playing good football.
It's not all about silverware... is it?

I see a couple of people have included Herbert Chapman - probably forgotten or even not known to most fans nowadays but he was hugely successful in the 20s and 30s. Firstly with Huddersfield Town (I think!) and then he built the fantastically successful Arsenal team that dominated the league in the period leading up to the War.
Another one, who probably doesn't really qualify but was certainly interesting, was Major Frank Buckley who was the manager at Wolves and introduced controversial monkey gland injections to help his players - queue lots of "he's got a monkey's head" jokes.

... good argument until here - rather undermines your credibility at that point - the guy has won countless trophies including 2 European Champions League Cups ...

I included Chapman because, I believe, he is the only manager to have won the League Championship 3 years running with 2 different clubs.

Spot on Cologne - Mee may have not won as much tin as many quoted, but he was instrumental in starting the changes at Aresenal that are still there now and he had a huge influence at Watford - and a huge plus for me is that he was a true gentlemen..

It was a big achievement for Billy Bingham to get Northern Ireland to the 82 World Cup then beat Spain in their own backyard, especially when you consider how little time an international manager has with his players.

Also, Hope Powell has got the England women's team to a point where they're in a position to challenge the dominant Germans and Americans.
