But Walcott somewhat forced his way out of the club. Bale never asked to leave. In fact Saints accepted a bid and he refused as he wanted to stay and help Saints get promoted. He didn't leave until the summer when it was fairly obvious that unfortunately Saints were in serious trouble and needed the money more than we needed Bale anyway. And by never declaring an intent to go, Saints maybe got a little more money than they might have otherwise.

That counts for a lot more than celebrating or not celebrating a goal.

Haha I hadn't noticed that but yeah, that Ronaldo 'non-celebration' is so routine that it's become a celebration in it's own right!

I wished Bale hadn't celebrated because his stupid heart gesture (he is now trying to trademark as a logo) is so annoying, not because of any Saints-related reason.

That's a good point, however you can be sure Bale was acting purely out of self interest, although at least he had the wisdom to see the benefit of playing for southampton for a bit longer as there was the prospect of playing in the premier league and getting a start every game. Even Le Tissier made the point clear in an interview that his decision to stay at southampton was purely out of self interest. Same goes for fans really they want the best for their club and most of the time couldn't care less how their ex players behave, it is sometimes nice to see an acknowledgement of Southampton's role in developing these players though.

To be honest, I don't care what an ex-player does. Just want the guys currently playing for us to show their passion for the team and care for the team.

You don't click the reply button more than once, even if it appears to have not reacted. What you do [and what I failed to do 12 times the other day when I was moderating] is copy yor text, close the browser and restart it, coming back to the forum. You'll find that 9/10 times, your message has actually been posted. If not, then go to the reply window, where you originally were, and paste your text. Then hit the reply button. After many unsuccessful attempts at this, you'll probably find you've made 12 posts.

Then just cry help to a moderator and we'll come along and delete all the additional posts. :)

Now that [gesture] I do find annoying and slightly pathetic. If he was still in a Saints team I'd probably find a way to contact him to ask him to stop doing it, as it would be making me feel nauseous. I actually nearly reached the other day when I saw a photo of him on his knees, doing his little hand movement, and there was a supporter, who he'd slid past, making the gesture back to him. He didn't even see her do it.

I mean, call me cynical, but doesn't anyone see the shallowness in this behaviour..? Oh, I'm sure she was caught up in the moment of it all, but it seems so contrived. Instead of genuinely leaping up and down like a crazed loony [because her team was on the point of winning], she was making a corporate style™ sign. Vomit inducing. Next we'll have Gareth Bale scores, brought to you by McDonalds, the home of the heart-attack food.

I've probably beaten my point into submission, but does anyone else see what I'm getting at [aside from my quotee, that is]..?

I'm sorry but who wouldn't celebrate after scoring such a good goal from that distance? not to mention the importance that it had for his team. It's pretty obvious he wouldn't have done it to disrespect us in anyway.

Something about nothing to me. I think most of us say things but then forget them in the intensity of goal scoring...........or maybe we have not ever had that kind of intensity :) However we all forget that we said we would or wouldn't do something but then do it or not when athe situation arises.

As for the 'heart' gesture. I quite like it personally. Better than half the knobs that immediately rip off their shirts full well knowing they are getting booked for it or the mass pile up that is going to injure the player at the bottom :) And at least it isn't the choreographed stupidity of those lower league youtube clips that may as well be diversity on BGT.

The Ronaldo calm? Not any worse than his celebration which is to run to the crowd, beat his chest telling the crowd 'I am the best', then remembering he has team-mates and beckoning them over to worship him too.

The king(s) of celebrations MLT and his single raised arm gesture to acknowledge the applause and Shearers 'point'. Can't abide all this modern day crap but quite like the heart :)

Yeah, except that he didn't get carried away with emotion and forget and celebrate his goal. He very deliberately celebrated in a choreographed manner (no doubt reminded by his agent) in order associate himself with that gesture for trademark reasons and to sell his future line of what is likely to be chavtastic clothing featuring quite an ugly hands-in-heart-shape logo. That is super-annoying regardless of who he scores against.

Plus, I still think it looks stupid. :D

Oh no he didn't. He just turned around, was congratulated by his teammates & that was it.

But next time, I demand that if he scores against us, he strips to the waist and flagellates using a barbwire socktie, but he must not cry, not tears allowed as that would be a mark of disrespect to the club he left FIVE years ago.

I really cannot begrudge anyone celebrating a goal as good as that one was.

Indeed. Although I personally find his heart gesture yucky [as described above], I find no problem with him celebrating, and I see no reason why he shouldn't celebrate a goal. There never used to be a precedent for not celebrating a goal for a new team against an old one. I find it hypocrisy in supporters anyway. They give themselves permission to sing potentially highly offensive songs, shout abuse you'd unlikely hear anywhere else, shout and/or make gestures questioning players sexuality or race, and then get all precious when an old player scores a goal against them.

I'm not suggesting Saints supporters would be guilty of these things en masse, but I've no doubt one, two or several fall into this category.

Yeah, I can't deny it. It was one of those goals only Bale had the qualities to execute. Acceleration, outright speed, power, and arrow-like accuracy. The ball was beyond Boruc before he was halfway through his dive and he left Luke Shaw for dead. Luke Shaw is no slouch and I doubt anyone would have got nearer to that shot than Boruc.

He did the "calm down calm down I'm not celebrating" hand gesture, before doing his heart sign to the crowd (his celebration).

Bale plays for himself and he plays for Spurs. I'm sure he wishes us well...just not when he's playing us. Good lad who stayed when he could have left us earlier.

Will no doubt be the first signing for Moyes?
