It is, as EMSC says, banter really. It started because Paul's kind of up himself, never smiles and takes himself way too seriously. Boasting that he's too good for his team and bragging that he beat Vettel in F3 (while Vettel was injured, incidentally) just led to everyone saying how crap he is, dire Resta etc. It was a kind of collective obsession here for a while.

But... I mysteriously found myself rooting for him in Bahrain. I don't know how it happened and I feel a bit dirty now, frankly.

I'd give it about 10 minutes into FP1 before he complains about the balance or lack of grip.

For "pragmatic" read "I've got a ready-made excuse".

Lot of cynics in here <laugh> He said the same thing in Bahrain that the Spain package should be worth a good chunk (.3/.4), but with twice that in the gap to breach and other teams moving forward that it won't be the miracle cure.

Well, to be fair, Bahrain excepted, he has been out-driving the car.

Chilton needs track time. Being continually disadvantaged relative to Bianchi is not helping his cause – although of course, it is very much promoting Bianchi! Chilton is better than Gonzalez – but as many know well enough by now, at the tail end of the grid it's mostly about money…

I agree. Bianchi is a rare talent but Chilton is holding his own. this year is a lurning curve but come next year Max Chilton will be a more refined driver.

Didnt Bianchi have to have fp1 out at Bahrain? (and he still thrashed Chilton). I just don't think Chilton is good enough to be an f1 driver yet, but because of daddy he is.

Gonzalez has only replaced Bianchi so far. And Chilton can hardly complain about it being mostly about money at the back of the grid.

"Gonzalez last raced competitively for Caterham in GP2 during the 2012 season, finishing 22nd in the points standings."

    Wow.
