Have just read Brix's house rules.......

I just wonder if Swords was only " moderately teasing".

    MORE SERIOUSLY
I came late to this last night, and after a few too many Crabbies, so revisited this morning...but Swords has done a magnificent job of making a whole range of mountains out of something smaller than a molehill. This was a WUMming of finest quality. And we all took the bait (except me because I was too drunk and fell asleep).
He was bored and so he had a pot a Brixton.....and Brixton trumped him with a steamroller, two Centurion tanks and an army of cloned robot terminator-like troops....an overkill I supposed, but if Brix hadn't done that Swords would have gnawed away like a tiny dormouse in a Unigate Cheddar cheese factory.

Well done Brix...you are a man of steel when called to be (a bit like Clark Kent I suppose...having met you I can see the resemblence).

Be this a lesson to the rest of us....don't cross Brix!
And Swords....I hope you will be back....the place will be quieter with out you....who will Flyer have as his dartboard and who will Oddball send all his fashion tips too

(I am not sure I should drive into work....the Crabbies haven't left my system yet!!)

These are the best words on this thread. I don't follow any bloody rules in life apart from my own which includes saying sorry if I am wrong here and there ... To type the words ban someone etc shows that person to be have a little bit of **** caught in their teeth ... Not nice if we are French kissing ?

Swords was clearly hard done up on here and is big part of the whole IMO

The rules IMO clearly required but mean **** all against your own rules in your head

Each poster on here has a style and I realize that needs to be accepted or you face the possibility of turning into a complete nerd ... This is now a place of happiness and enjoyment where we can talk about everything and anything IMO ... It's evolved.

It's alright having fire Marshalls but when the flames are real I have seen many panic

The truth of the matter is that Swords makes excellent reading and the world of this forum binding themselves to the rule book is very grey and boring

Hence Swords why Brixton understands this also and let's it all slide .. There is a Highway Code but we all mostly drive like ****s shouting at other ****s for doing the same as us

Anyone got a Highway Code book in their motor ? .... Exactly

The rule book only comes out when there is a problem ....

I agree some on here have even have driving gloves but to sit there and read the ****er or even talk about it must be sad ?

This forum clearly means a lot to people ... Why not just all repeat these words and ponder ... Get you cock out and point it at the sun take a deep drag , exhale and praise The Lord

    Some wonderful advice there.

I think there is a middle ground between grifter and telfords points of view. Swords is a character - bit like a stand up comedian - controversial comedy. He naturally won't be everyone's cuppa tea, but you can't expect to come on a forum like this one and like everyone. However, this was a push too far and it's pissed Brix off. Fair do's. I'm sure the man's got far better things to do than deal with this and I think swords realises this now. Maybe this is a moment of realisation for swords. I hope so, this is a quality forum and I have no issues with it or with anyone, never have. I reckon swords wants to continue to be a part of this, he always comes back from the chiller, and if you haven't blown it already, I hope you do stay, reign it in a bit and remember who's on your side.

    All good points.
I think everybody would want to see swords on this forum. When he behaves, he adds humour and no short supply of quality. My work requires that I live life by rule books and the last thing I need or want is to have my social/private life controlled in the same way. I do however, realise that without house rules here, this forum would quickly lose its structure and fall to pot very quickly.
Swords is a humorous individual and most on here realise that much of what he says is tongue in cheek. His problem is simple, he doesn't know when to stop. He is well aware that many of his comments are right on the line of acceptability. DT has regularly highlighted how one or two people on here have lined swords up, and he is right. But Swords is not stupid, far from it. He dug his own hole.
This time he has gone too far. Not just because the person he has had a pop off is a Mod but because this Is the second time in quick succession that he has made ridiculous allegations against a member on this site and then couldn't substantiate them.

If it wasn't for the likes of Swords and one or two others constantly testing the boundaries of common acceptability, there'd be little need for mods, let alone rules, guidelines, finer definitions, consultations, reviews and the like.

Of course he's amusing, more so to some than others but he's also deliberate. He's admitted that in PMs to NUTS and me in the past.

As a result, this board's been split into two camps for far too long. On the one side there are quite a few who enjoy Swords' audacious style; and on the other, quite a few who cannot abide him.

As mods, we've been forced to patrol the middle ground, trying to keep a semblance of order both sides could understand and tbh, failing miserably.

At the same time we've gone to great lengths to control the active variable being Swords' willingness and ability to see sense. What was needed was for him to find ways of sophisticating his style: to retain the edgy but keep it genuinely respectful both to the individuals he would target and to the transparent will of the board as a whole. In short to keep to the banter side of wumming, baiting etc..

Lots of commentators have achieved this: Oscar Wilde as a high profile example who managed to both intrigue and amuse the brittle Victorian society with his wit; and lately, Christopher Hitchens who made a crust smoothly telling God-fearing America there is no God and therefore their basic premise is purely fantasy. American audiences lapped it up for decades. Unfortunately, even at our humble level, Swords also failed miserably.

People on here may have realised by now that personally I don't do anger - especially not when it comes to words typed out for little more than fairly mindless effect. However, I must confess that my patience ran out yesterday. This wasn't at all because Swords had called me names - but simply because he decided to once again push the boundaries for his own delectation and in so doing threw all the patience, work and general aggravation he and his ilk have caused me throughout my time as mod, back in my face. Frankly I couldn't bear the thought of yet another summer of constant distraction having to field his hair-brained nonsense.

For that reason it had to be a case of him or me. Tbh, I would've preferred it otherwise but at the end of the day, there's no denying it was Swords' choice and the devil in him just couldn't resist it. Never mind.

I see it this straight just like Nuts today ... A simple recognition a few mistakes have been made by everyone ... let it wash over ... Yes seriously be that brave and move on.

Dwell is another word for standing still in my rule book after all how can we affect how has already happened.

I couldn't give a **** if Swords is judged to be a WUM whatever that sad description even is? ... I enjoy his contributions and if you can't handle his style then have a look at yourself ... You can ignore him or me or anyone and there lies the really interesting point ... why don't you?. The true mark of Swords is that he can give and that it and I hope he also considered that. I feel he has a right to be a little upset but I hope his bruises heal.

The fact that you have divided opinions and a lot of them I am sure shows the mods that he is a big part either way ... therefore they have to adapt a big themselves to this and I am sure that Swords as all of us will have to adapt also

    130 posts means everything IMO

I think when you reflect in time you will see the error your of him or me statement ... It proves to me exactly how emotive this forum can be ... It has spirit.

Am I missing something here ... Has he been banned again?

You're right. Long reflection has suggested a flaw in my intentions. It tells me that I was wrong to keep his detractors at bay whilst endlessly trying to get Swords onside in an attempt to maintain the entertainment factor. Clearly an impossible ask - and one that some on here quietly rue about my over liberal tenure as mod. They know who they are and to them I apologise.

The rest of the story is told in the posts throughout this thread. The current position is this.

I'm waiting to see if Swords changes his mind and moves to convince 15 of you to get rid of me.

As for the him or me thing, that is exactly how it's going to be. Whilst you may think it's all been fun, the last two summers were nothing but agg for Goldie, NUTS and me. I come to this board like everyone else does, for a bit of me time but in my case with a little modding thrown in. As it turned out it often became a chore trying to appease two conflicting and increasingly entrenched points of view. It's not so bad when the subject is someone new to the agreed standards but when it's the same people time and time again, it wears you out.

Personally, I'm not in the least bit bothered whether I stay or go now or later. I've done my bit. However, whilst we've got two very able members cutting their teeth as mods, who I know will do a great job and serve us well, I'm not prepared to them to deal with the same old ****. The rules are now both simple and clear; and we all either abide by them or do the other thing.

However, I also know that I won't be banging my head against the wall repeating myself to the usual suspects again this summer. Time to move on, one way or the other.
