My wife, God bless her, has told me that she doesn't want anything for her 50th birthday. I wouldn't still be married after all these years if I actually believed her, but I'm wondering if anyone has a decent suggestion of what to do other than the traditional "surprise" party or dinner/show/night in London?

Season ticket for next season, or you could take her to Barnsley next season and treat her to a chicken Balti pie!

Depending on budget...a surprise trip to Paris for the day/night? You can get quite good short break deals on the Eurostar website...easy journey, and best place in the world for a romantic get away. PM me if you want any further advice. I can even let you know a pub here that could be showing the QPR game that weekend...although that might not go down so well.

You could take her on the English version of the Orient Express which goes to Chatsworth House and includes a very nice lunch.

A lunch trip on the Orient Express is nice. Bit of old time glamour and glitz.

They used to do a trip out to the country and back, with a nice meal. My Mrs enjoyed it.

Seeing as our house has a music and film bias (along with football) I'd suggest looking around for cinemas showing classic films and concerts by her preferred people (along with a stay away in some nice hotel.

If the weather is better then a cottage in the lake district (although it doesn't escape housework).

Sorry, not very creative but good luck.

My wife suggests you take her to Rome, Roller. Think it's more of a hint at me though somehow!

    Thanks so far guys.

Season ticket is a non starter as she supports one of the less interesting teams in West London.

Went up in a tethered hot air balloon in Bournemouth (the Bournemouth Eye!) and she didn’t enjoy that.

Paris is a thought and fortunately out of season so watching the match would not be an issue.

Both trains are definitely worth investigating

She’s got crap taste in films and music as well as football teams, and I’m not sure we’d have long enough for either the cottage in the lakes or Ireland; we’d never make it out of the pub in Ireland would we?

Not really got time for Rome either, she is a teaching assistant and wouldn't dream of taking time off school.

    Any more thoughts?

flights don't cost that much. if you bring her for your may bank hol you'll prob get cheap hotel rates over here as our bank hol isn't until June. give me a buzz if you need any suggestions. I've been to dozens of hotels around the country doing weddings so I'd have a good idea as to where's good and bad.

Salcombe, Devon, is by far the most beautiful place in this country and great for a few days.

Failing that, stick it in her arse if you never have done. That will be a real surprise.

Looks like you are getting off lightly Roller. It's my wife's 50th and our 20th wedding anniversary, and my wife is not a 'no fuss' person. She's trying a rolling series of regular 'treats' for herself, so far a bread baking course (actually good value for the rest of us too, nowt to beat home baked bread), day at the races with her girlfriends, we have one of those Boots country hotel escapes to book, we're probably off to Chicago for a long weekend with American mates, doubtless some kind of party for the anniversary, and I'm thinking of renting a large country retreat for a rolling fiesta of food and booze interspersed by bracing walks to the pub with mates for her birthday.

Oh yeah, she's getting 2 new bathrooms as well and we haven't thought about the summer holiday yet.

Next year, I'm applying for debt relief, but who cares, you only live once.
