    Some interesting news perhaps….

FORMER Charlton chief executive and executive vice chairman Peter Varney has been appointed as the new CEO of KEH Sports Ltd.

It is a newly-formed subsidiary of the Kuwaiti European Holding Company and Varney's role will be to oversee the group's planned and future investment in UK football.

Dr Abdulla Alhumaidi, chairman of the Kuwaiti European Holding Company, said: "We are delighted to have secured the services of Peter Varney to this key new role in UK operations.

"He has a wealth of experience in the football sector and I very much look forward to working with him on our proposed range of current and future football-related projects."

Why was this story given by KEH to the South London Press? Is it just because it is Peter Varney or is their something else?Time will tell.

Let's not jump the gun here.....Reg (like everybody else) needs a job and his background is in football administration....... at the present time that is all we know.

    Sometimes 2 + 2 really do just make 4

That is very true AHLL.....from what I can gather so far Dr Abdulla's interest is in the Eastbourne area having spent a lot of time there and already has commercial interests in devloping the area. He's an interesting guy though......pretty prolific in this part of the world.

As I say...something to talk about!

I feel really sorry for Bernie and the supporters trust. 9 months of whyning and moaning and they finally get a chance of scoffing the digestives in the boardroom and the buggers sell up!!! Lol

I did wonder why the board gave in. A week in politics is a long time...

Best rumour for ages, definitely some thing to anxt about during the dull summer months. Sounds as good as the Zabeel rumour.

We could start a shopping list for the £30m we will have to spend over the summer........ I would spend most of it on the training ground to get Cat 1 status <ok>

Interesting, but I'm sure his new bosses would have an idea of where they want Peter to focus his attention on. If he could perhaps put them in the way of The Valley then this could be very interesting. I'm still not convinced all of our board want to sell though.

It could be the other way round. It could be that they took Varney precisely because they were already interested in Charlton. If some rich nutters want to take over a football club, Charlton looks a good choice:
--- Modern stadium needing little or no further investment
--- Good spirit among the playing and support staff and no fan unrest
--- Huge potential support in a densely populated area
    --- Excellent youth scheme
--- Excellent image as a squeaky-clean club that does outstanding communal and charity work
--- Not the same unreasonable expectations among supporters as someone taking over clubs like Leeds, Sheff Wed, Blackburn, Leicester, etc. Our fans would be less impatient. (Yes, I know that would change within a few seasons like it did with Curbs, but at least we would give the new owners a breathing space of two or three seasons before we demanded the right to win cups and play in Europe.)
--- London location so the directors, their rich pals and clients could enjoy the high life

It doesn't need them all to want to. Just a controlling interest.

How do we know that these people are not already involved, directly or indirectly, in the ownership of the club?

    Or maybe with Zabeel Investments?

The US State Dept and CIA have been trying to work out who controls what in the Middle East for thirty years and still haven't got a clue, so what chance do we have?

You're right not all of them have to sell, but TJ owns nearly 50%, and my opinion is he doesn't want to sell, but just get investors. I don't know anything more than others, but I think we've all established it's Slater and his people that want out as his steak was reduced. Then again, if he's offered a profit I'm sure he could be persuaded, but from what we can gather by his negotiation skills he won't be a push over (and fair play).

Early noises about this say that we aren't thought to be in their minds. Hopefully it isn't as clear cut as that, because we do need investment. But I'm not going to get excited about anything until it goes through. Too many failed takeovers in our recent history have taught me that much.

    http://www.kentonline.co.uk/gravesend_messenger/sport/Varney-to-Fleets-rescue-506/

Ebbsfleet are the team now being linked:

It could be that they would rather take a team with minimal costings and start to build a strong reputation with the plan being to hit the football league and being able to attract more money in sponsorships in comparisons to teams in the same division. Something that Crawley did - buy for a low cost and build a team in a league that usually has little to no investment. Of course there will be a rapid rise plan that will contain several back to back promotions to hit forecasts.
