He had a clause in his contract which triggered a 1 year extension after so many appearances. It's probably ok to have a few old pros like him around the place and he's ok in League 2 even if his legs look a bit shot.

Can't see him being a key player. Will probably be a useful left-sided player on the bench
for the last fifteen minutes of some matches; or if we have an(other) injury crisis!

he triggered a clause in his contract. i doubt ward had plans to keep him.

so far, harrold and smith been offered new deals and both times ward has made statements about them and how important they are to the team. also higgs and the player made made statements.

this time for paterson? no comment by ward or the player. higgs did have this short statement though.... "I would like to thank Jim for his efforts since he joined us, and I hope that we can now go on to have a successful season with Jim as part of our squad." http://www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/article/paterson-contract-791439.aspx

to me this sounds like paterson wont have much game time and be a just a squad player. dont blame him for triggering the clause, i would too if i was him. guaranteed a wage for the next 12 months regardless if he is playing or not. at patersons age, he may have found it hard to find a new club so he gets a deal that suits him.

looks like ward may have to revise some plans as his wage budget may be effected.

he got experience which could help out the younsters. but his legs have gone. i certainly wouldnt use him as a left back again as i think ward likes his full backs bombing up and down. paterson hasnt got that anymore. he can play CB and CM as well but i just dont think he is good enough now for those spots. useful to fill in when needed and his experience should help him too. but i think this may mean a slight change of plans for JW as i bet he had plans for those wages.
