I presume then you view Gerard Houllier with the same level of contempt? Classy. <ok>

The reason I ask is I believe the hatred towards Evra is based upon an ill judged perception. They perceive that Evra told a lie and got their only decent player into trouble with the football authorities and so to this day they dread the thought of him leaving and therefore believe Evra will be partly responsible for him going. Its quite pathetic if this is indeed the case.

If Suarez gets into hot water with the FA, its his own fault no one else.

Course it is. But then like DL says pretty much all of football is based on ill judged perceptions. The simple fact is Evra plays for their biggest rivals, got their best player in trouble, and in all honesty does behave like an arrogant little twat at times. Makes it very easy for them to hate him.

Tho' not sure about DL's OJ analogy - a better analogy might be the people who blame rape victims for dressing provocatively or leading blokes along only to withdraw their consent if the rapist crosses the line. An ill judged perception based on a selective view of the facts, and probably an inherent tendency to hate women.

I was wondering which poster would be the first to bring up the other alleged incidents in which Evra was supposed to have reported as racist abuse while neglecting to note he did no such thing. Dogleash himself made mention of this on the afternoon of the match at Anfield. Its a view which surprises me no matter how many times it is refuted, that some idiot will always hark on about the other so called incidents and let them cloud their perception of Evra.

Aye, but again that's just the natural human confirmation bias. People do it for all sorts of things - they hear information which confirms what they want to believe, then they believe it without questioning.

There's the same problem with something like Hillsborough, for example. 24 years after the event it has been conclusively proven that ticketless fans didn't contribute to the disaster. Yet people still hear others blame ticketless fans and think "that sounds about right" then just accept it as a fact, particularly if they feel no particular fondness towards LFC. It's just human nature to hear what you want to hear and accept it as fact, even if there's no evidence to support it.

Evra is provocatively black and objected to being racially abused by Suarez. Thick, bitter scum like BBF will no doubt hate Ivanovic for being provocatively marinaded and objecting to Suarez taking a bite out of him.

I thought you understood me a little better than that. However, I actually am not keen on the French, mainly because they appear to openly loathe us and I don't understand why.

Probably because they think the English openly loathe them and they don't know why.

I never get fully why people hate the French, even though I know they allegedly hate us.

I like them for the most part, they're like any 'race' of people in that they have their fair share of ****ers and plenty of ok folk. I do like their '**** it' attitude and their occasional anarchy. The Parisians can be utterly repulsive of course but what can you do? Just don't go there.

I also like the Germans, who we're also supposed to hate. I guess it's just Liverpool fans I can't stand!

I think people from the south a france dont like us the old vichy french as we did blow up their entire naval fleet. The only thing that annoys me about the french is that they can speak english but refuse to do so. Germans are sound as have german family..

True enough, a mate of mine lived in Nice for a while so I went often and some of them were twats, very much so. The lads who worked over there just flat out refused to even attempt to speak French and reckoned they were all ****s so only went to the Irish bars to use as their boozing establishments. All that is a bit self fulfilling though I thought.

That all said, my girlfriend is a French teacher and fluent and when WE went there and she spoke in French they would answer in English so they are indeed a bunch of funny ****ers down there!

We're off to France this summer, will have to see how that region treats us.

I think a lot of it stems from the war and post war. Didn't Eisenhower say the Germans were able to forgive the British and Americans for defeating them, but the French were never able to forgive them for saving them?

Tho' I think a lot of it does stem from the attitude of some Brits and Americans when in France - like Ruff says, so many people don't even bother to try and speak French and just assume the locals will be ****s. Which in turn becomes a self fulfilling prophecy, and the French think the same way about us so we also treat them like ****s.

RHC sums it up nicely - plenty of Brits aren't keen on the French cos they think the French dislike us. Plenty of the French probably also aren't keen on us cos they think we dislike them and so on and so forth.

I think you should extend an olive branch this summer Ruff. Just don't extend it in a threatening way - the ****s will probably surrender to you...

We're going over to France in September for a two week holiday, will be interesting to see what the locals are generally like...

Must be honest though, I've heard from other South Africans that the locals are a lot friendlier if you speak afrikaans (derived from Dutch settlers, sounds a lot like Dutch) rather than English, we'll try both languages out and see if it's true!

    Where are you going?

We're off to Atlantic coast, about half way down, not far from La Rochelle.
Very nice there, I've been surfing when younger but quite a bit further down to where we're going this time.

    Nice, sounds great! <ok>

My girlfriend and I have never been to France so we're doing the whole tourist thing. We're spending about 4 days in Paris, then we're off to northern France (haven't decided exactly where yet) for a few days, then off to southern France (around Marseille) for a few days, before spending the last few days in Paris again. We might spend a bit of time in Belgium but I don't know if we'll have time...

Unfortunately we won't be going to the west coast like you are, wish there was enough time!

I see you've chosen an easily recognisable username Ruff, good on you! I struggle to keep track of who is who!

I was going to change my name to something involving the number 20 (very unique that, I know), but then I'd probably have an identity crisis. :emoticon-0138-think
