Society has now changed, a couple of years ago flying the Flag of St George was viewed by some as racist, but now it's just seen as supporting the England football team.
Put a flag on a pole and you risk breaking planning regs, put one on your car and you just look like a chav!
Nobody sees it as racist. The Daily Mail (and other tabloids) say it is seen as racist, because their readers enjoy feeling like they are oppressed.
The people who get them from the Sun newspaper, during World Cups and Euros, when England are playing, with "The Sun" written across it or with the Rampant Lion (the Scottish national symbol) on it are idiots.
This thread sort of illustrates why we don't really celebrate St George's Day - People can't mention it without going on about racism.
It's a strange anomaly. The Scots, Welsh and Irish all have their own distinct identities but the English do not. It's as though the 'powers that be' are ashamed to celebrate our rich and glorious -and often barbaric (but no worse then any other country's) - history.
Many Patronages of Saint George exist around the world, including: Georgia, England, Egypt, Bulgaria, Aragon, Catalonia, Romania, Ethiopia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lithuania, Portugal, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia, as well as the cities of Genoa, Amersfoort, Beirut, Botoşani, Drobeta Turnu-Severin, Timişoara, Fakiha, Bteghrine, Cáceres, Ferrara, Freiburg im Breisgau, Kragujevac, Kumanovo, Lebanon, Ljubljana, Pérouges, Pomorie, Preston, Qormi, Rio de Janeiro, Lod, Lviv, Barcelona, Moscow and Victoria, as well as of the Scout Movement[3] and a wide range of professions, organizations and disease sufferers.
Lets see.. Irish - Any excuse for a piss up. Fair does to them. Also latched onto by people who've barely seen Ireland on the TV and most probably couldn't point to it on a map. Wales - Desperate need to be Welsh to differentiate themselves from the English and Scots. No more fuss made about St Davids day than there is in England for St George that I'm aware of. Scotland - They celebrate Burns night more, along with the rest of us, but like the Welsh, St Andrews day is just a way to make themselves seem more Scottish than British. Are any of the 3 above actual national days off work in the middle of the week? So, who gives a crap really? They're all just used as vehicles to promote nationalistic tendencies, which is fine, if that's your thing. Just don't try and accuse those of us who can't be arsed with it of being less English or whatever. That holds as much weight as the plastic fans crap we see too much of. Each to their own, live and let live, that's the English way now.
We have our own identity but unfortunately it is more of the lager lout variety than anything else. Other countries see us as ignorant and backward but then again we celebrate that kind of stuff on TV sending numpties round the world making light entertainment on the back of it.
at work we get all the bunting and **** out for St paddy , but not a single thing for St Georges day , The Americans will bend over backwards to find an ancestral link to Ireland , Scotland and Wales but you never hear a politician declaring their English heritage .
