I wondered if i could ask a favour? I know alot of you are endeared to the HDM and their reporting of city, however I'm doing some work experience with them shortly (specifically the Sports Team). Seen as its not the busiest period as is pretty obvious with the lack of news currently, I was asked to come up with some prospective article/story ideas relating to local sports news. Grassroots usually throws up some good ideas and I was wondering since alot of you may have kids in local teams (for any sport), or may be in a veterans team, pub team, referee (again in any sport) that some of you may have ideas for an article I could do. Im open to any ideas whatsoever, it would be greatly appreciated and if you dont want to mention it on the board then feel free to message me on here. I suppose stuff like a manager or organiser whos been volunteering their time for a team for years and years would be a good idea, or a piece on some stars of the future or a local team on a brilliant run. Also any contacts that anyone has that might be able to help me would be brilliant. Thanks for reading, cheers again.

I did some work experience with the HDM in about 2007 shadowing the editor and I wish I'd taken more out of it. There's loads you could do with that. Hull Ionians have just narrowly avoided relegation, a friend of mine is a trampolinist for Hull and he is about to embark on a tour taking part in the Batman stage show across the world.
I'm guessing you're wanting to become a journalist. Get in touch with Burnsy and ask him for an interview/look round the BBC. I used him for an interview for my uni work and he was fantastic. Gave me some great tips and was a gent.
I've just had work experience at MTV and got really stuck in. Make sure you get stuck in and ask tons of questions. I failed to do that when I was at the HDM because I was really shy so just go for it.

If it's what you're wanting to do ask tem if you can work for them on a freelance basis while you're still studying just submitting features as and when and getting paid per piece rather than on a retainer. That way you'll only need to do relatively few articles but you can legitimately claim to have been getting printed by them for however long you're studying for. And they should be better quality as you're not going to be working to as tight a deadline as the main writers.

I graduated uni a couple of years ago and been trying to get a 'proper job' ever since, everything job/internship ive done has been temporary with no prospect of a permanent job at the end. The experience im getting with them is just short term, but could hopefully lead to a longer placement if they think im suited to it. I did an English Lit and Creative Writing degree, but I have no journalism experience as such, I have done some copywriting in jobs Ive had though. Been applying for work experience/graduate trainee scheme with the BBC and didn’t make the cut at the third stage of application, but I enjoy writing so thought id get some newsroom experience to see if I could hack it, pardon the pun.

Cheers Kirkella, did you happen to have an email addy for your trampolining mate? Sounds like a gd little quirky story with the Batman Stage Show angle. Yeah think I may get in contact with Burnsy, they had a Blast reporter last summer doing something with the Sports Team, but not seen it advertised this year. MTV sounds fun!

I know a Hull lad who's also very good at trampolining, he's 18 and hoping to make the GB Olympic team for 2012 or 2016. He's also been filmed to take part in some BBC TV programme for kids which is essentially a talent contest and they described him as 'the highlight of the series'. I'll see if I can get you an email or something.
