Oh I didn't realise you we're Arsene Wenger, as that's the only way you can make that statement. It's your opinion but personally I don't think anyone at the club least of all Wenger would pay that much for one player even if he did only get paid 90k a week.
Well we did offer 30mn for Gotze in the summer, not to mention we matched Chelseas offer for Mata of 24mn. The former was rejected and we were blown out of the water in terms of wages in the latter. Not saying Wenger is not prudent but it has more to do with wages and not the actual one off fee.
You really don't do reading comprehension do you? But apart from all I said earlier, the only way that we will sign a 30M player is if the domestic Financial Fair Play rules stop clubs offering 200K salaries and big transfer fees. Looking at the rules, it seems unlikely to me that anyone will be able to offer 30M transfer fees and stay within the limit. One worrying aspect of the whole thing, is that if the big 3 find a way to circumvent the rules, Arsenal may find themselves handicapped at a time when they might just have started to compete under the old rules.
Sorry, but that's bullshit. Arsenal had the opportunity to buy Mata weeks before Chelsea were interested but decided to wait until Fabregas was sold before making a move. Mata was apparently keen on moving to Arsenal as well. http://metro.co.uk/2011/08/01/juan-mata-transfer-to-arsenal-on-the-verge-of-collapse-100515/ No mention of Chelsea or wages anywhere in that article there.
Why do you think it is so much more likely that Arsenal somehow baulked at the money, than Mata decided not to leave. Given that Mata is now likely on double the salary he would have got at Arsenal, and was totally in control of the situation, it just seems far more likely that Chelsea said, We don't care about paying another 6M for you and we will pay you double what they can, don't take their offer. Given that Chelsea have loads of money and Mata would get double the money, I just don't see why that is so improbable, that you have to build some vast conspiricy theory involving a whole slew of people screwing up and acting like rookies in the transfer market. You can choose what you want to believe of course, but all I can say is that is isn't very convincing and calling bullshit on people and saying something only slightly better than, oh I don't know, maybe that an alien has taken over Arsene Wenger and is trying to ruin Arsenal, is just slightly nuts.
No, I haven't done that anywhere. It'd be nice if you didn't just make things up. All I've done is used a source to explain what happened, not given reasons for why it happened. And it'd help your case if you could provide anything to prove that Mata moved to Chelsea for money instead of just assuming it.
There was a story at the time about Mata expecting to join Arsenal and waiting by the phone for a call that never came. Not sure how true it was, Guillem Balague seemed pretty convinced Arsenal just never made a move for him
Thats bollox actually. Mata I understand is on around 'only' 60k a week. The reason you didn't get him is becuase Wenger was trying to play silly buggers and get a bargain. They failed to agree a fee in time and then under Mata's contract the higher buy out clause kicked in and you wouldn't pay it. Not only was Mata worth every penny of that transfer fee, his wages are probably in line with some of your bench warmers (Arshavin etc). As for Fellaini being worth 18m, didn't Everton pay about 14m for him before he was really that well known and certainly before he was a proven top player in the P.L?? He will costs around 25m in my view. Would be a great signing for Arsenal, but Wenger will probably rather buy a 5 1/2 foot player whose good at passing in triangles in training ground drills. That man nerver learns.
Our guest of honour at our supporters club's annual dinner last year was Nigel Winterburn. After the meal he did a Q & A sesssion. One of the questions asked of him was why we didn't buy Mata.According to Winterburn he was led to believe that Arsenal did not have the money to buy Mata until the deals to sell Nasri & Fabregas had been concluded.Whether this is true I do not know but this is what Winterburn said.
I'm just saying that there are a host of far more likely stories two of which have been posted here, (Arsenal didn't have the money or that Mata was lured away by a better deal). Metro are hardly a reliable source. I just don't think you can call bullshit on what other people believe and cite a more improbable tale that involves a ridiculous level of stupidity from the club we support. I think you can criticize Wenger for NOT being interested in Mata, or not being interested enough, but trying to infer that he WAS interested but somehow screwed up the deal, just seems wildly speculative to me.
