please log in to view this image That's the league table if only English goals counted. And yet Roy won't call up any of our squad, typical.
I don't really understand the significance of this. If there were a table ordered by Uruguayan goals Liverpool would be top. So what?
Thanks Qwerty. And it shows the extent teams rely on foreign influence PTF. In my eyes it goes even further in justifying any Saints players getting called up to the England squad.
er because we're English and would like the best English players playing for England (that is, from Southampton)
But this tells you nothing about the quality of those players. Using this measure, a team of entirely foreign players but only English strikers, for example, would be higher than a team that has foreign goal scorers but otherwise a team of brilliant English players.
The fact remains that Saints have Clyne, Shaw, Cork, Lallana, Puncheon, Rodriguez and Lambert as regular starters in the team. I would think that is a fairly high proportion of English players compared to some other teams in the Prem. And all of them except Shaw and Cork have scored this season.
Oh yeah, I completely agree that England should be looking at some of our players. I just don't think that case is made by that table.
I have a feeling Cork will score a screamer this season and can see Shaw getting a random, but well deserved goal.
I could guarantee that you would jump on this post with one of your sarcastic anti English comments. You might not but most of us live in England, and are quite pleased to see that our current team has so many good English players. This table may have no significance to you whatsoever but it does make interesting viewing for many of us.
Damn you, just saw that you beat me to this one! First the Boruc thread, now this, you are the new DTLW!
Because many for years insisted it was a good thing that the core of England players came from the same clubs. i.e. a few from Liverpool & Man Utd (or 11 from Tottenham if your name is Venables or Hoddle) because they were used to playing with each other. Some still hold this belief with Spain calling most of their players from 2 sides and sides like Russia or Ukraine over achieving but fielding sides from a couple of clubs. Therefore forget if the Saints English contingent are the best or not. Do an Alf Ramsey, select the Saints English and then fill the gaps from Man Utd etc. My team: Hart Clyne, Cahill, Smalling???, Shaw Cork, Carrick Lallana, Rooney, Rodriguez Lambert. Looks like a winning side to me although I can't think of any other decent English centre backs other than Cahill.
