Top scorer B Lester, in the cup but he only played three matches.( I think) Benny Lester was signed from Scarboro' understudy to Norman Moore at Centre Foreward, he didn't get much of a chance with City and disappeared without trace eventually. Norman Moore was signed from Grimsby and was a great success even in Raich Carters team.
Not according to my stats Charles. I've got him as playing 26 league matches in 46/47 and scoring 15 goals (including a hat-trick in the 3-1 home win against Tranmere) and 2 goals in the cup.
Well Craig you have just destroyed my Hull City Memory bank. I remember Benny Lester well. I argued that he was good but most of my mates didn't and I only remember him playing a few games but I couldn't always afford to go so I only counted what I saw and they stuck in my memory. I would not have believed he'd played 26 games. I'm going recheck all what I have written about my life now because of this lapse
Sorry mate. Maybe you're thinking of 1947/48 when he only played one league game - scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw at York and one cup game at home to Southport (1-1)?
My husband again " Don't despair Charles as I do not even recall Benny Lester playing in 46/47 but do remember another centre forward playing in 47/48 called George(Spud) Murphy who was a favourite of mine for the short time he was there. When Raich Carter arrived he preferred Norm Moore and Spud moved on. He had played for Wales during the war years."
Considering Lester was City's top scorer in 46/47 here's the goals to refresh your memories: Benny Lester's 15 league goals - 1946/47: City 1-2 Gateshead; Lester Tranmere 1-3 City; Lester 3 (sorry I said that was a home game in post #502 City 2-1 Darlington; Lester, Chadwick City 3-0 Halifax; Chadwick 2, Lester New Brighton 1-5 City; Watson 2, Lester 2, Hassall City 1-0 Wrexham; Lester Bradford 1-1 City; Lester Lincoln 0-3 City; Lester 2, Davidson City 4-0 Southport; Lester, Peach, Chadwick, Hassall Darlington 0-2 City; Lester 2 FA Cup; New Brighton 1-2 City; Lester, Chadwick Darlington 1-2 City; Lester, Peach
Absolutely brilliant John, yes I was there and the referee was one Mr F. M. Barr our maths and science teacher at Wheeler St school. Fred Barr use to referee many matches on weekends, some in the old 1st division and I use to pester him for programmes from those games, which I still have. I also have copies of this programme you show along with one for Chris Chilton, verses Leeds Utd, and one for Billy Bly dated 19th October 1961 and playing against and All Star 11. You would not believe the line up for that match so her goes: 1 - Bert Trautman, 2 - Stanisforth (not sure of first name), 3 - Bill Eckersley, 4 - Ward (again no names in the programme notes), 5 - (Syd? played for Fulham?) Owen, 6 - Ronnie Clayton, - 7 - Billy Liddell, 8 - Tom Finney, 9 - was originally down as Lawton but is crossed out and Close (Brian Close I think) is written in its place, 10 - Bobby Mitchell, - 11 - Bobby Langton. I got the programme signed by Billy Bly which wasn't too hard in those days as he had a sweet shop nearly next door to what was the old Shell garage and is now the disused Tradex store. Also in the programme note are write ups for Billy Wright, and Tommy Docherty, can't remember it they made an appearance. The City team that day was: Bly, Hassall, Durham, Harris (Revie was down to play but I crossed that out and wrote Harris), Porteous, Greenhalgh, Harrison, Mortenson, Moore, Bradbury (Mannion was on the programme but again crossed out) and Cripsey. I do forget which programmes I have in my collection maybe should photograph some and post, quite facinating when I look back.
Great to hear from someone who was also there, I had forgotten the ref was from Wheeler Street, and now you mention it, it brought back to my memory that that was the case. I also used to go into Billy Bly's shop to get some sweets before the games. Some iconic names you mention, Ronnie Clayton played for Blackburn I think. It great to look back at these old programmes, brings back great memories.
Incidentally John I was looking at the 1960 FA Cup Final programme, Blackburn v Wolves and Blackburn had some interesting names in their team. Besides Ronnie Clayton (capt.), Dave Whelen (who received a broken leg and is now the Wigan owner I think), Derek Dougan (who terrorised city when we were there in the 60's, I was at Molineux), Bryan Douglas (the England center forward) and Ally Macleod (former manager of Scotland I believe).
Some well know names, though I seem to remember Bryan Douglas being a right winger. Strangely enough I heard on the radio the other day there was an accident on Derek Dougan way, but I missed which city it was, so obviously has a street name, named after him somewhere.
Correct John he was a right winger it was Dougan who was the Blackburn Center forward, not sure who was the England center forward was at the time without Googling, I mostly go by memory so maybe I should Google or Bing or whatever more.
Well I guess us older ones don't instantly turn to Google or Bing. I was just looking at a programme I have when City played Everton in the cup 4th January 1964. The team was Williams, Davidson, Dennis Butler, Collinson, Feasey, McMillan, Clarke, Billy Wilkinson, Chilton, Henderson, McSeveney. The team pre Waggy era. City drew 1-1 at home and narrowly lost the replay 2-1.
I had a cull a good while back which I regret in a way even though the programmes I got rid of were doubles of programmes I already had. Don't know if you remember John but back at BP people just use to throw their programmes away so you could pick up as many as you wanted, which I often did, don't remember that being the situation at other grounds I visited to see City. I was also an avid autograph collector in those day and as I look back at my book I have the likes of Terry Venables, Rodney Marsh, who played for QPR then, but I couldn't get near to the Chelsea team when they came for the cup replay. I spent hours round the side of BP down the North Road side, it was where the away team coach use to park up and so most the players got off there and also it was the place City players entered the ground when training. In fact its true to say I spent the majority of my time at BP both during the season and during the close season and loved every minute of it, I lived nearby, in Hawthorn Ave and my grandparents lived down North Road. I was a right pest LOL I use to sneak in and watch the training sessions, hardly ever on the pitch though just the running track, then I use to bike off to the Cricket Circle, yes ironically the KC now, and watch the training there. But of course that all altered when the gym and training pitches were built behind the South Stand (Bunkers) end of the ground. Charlie Crickmore knew my family and after his transfer to Norwich we travelled to Carrow Road to watch City and he pulverised the defence I thought you tw*t LOL. It was a sad day when Chilton was transferred but even sadder that he and Waggy never went on to greater things, like play for England. It must have been a choker for Chris when Stuart Pearson went on the Man Utd and England I suppose he could have wondered what could have been, but of course it was to our advantage that both he and Waggy stayed.
Well that does bring back memories, I used to bike down North road as I worked on the fish dock in those days, and see lads waiting near the player entrance waiting to try and get autographs. I used to watch from the North stand, until the south stand was built, then we would always stand there.
From an old codger at BP who never saw the top league to all you guys who are of the KC brigade may I say congratulation as to get promotion to the top flight, twice, whilst I'm still alive its phenomenal, changed my underpants by the way
I'm the same, I was surprised the first time it happened, doubley shocked yesterday. I thought the gods were against it.
