I can kind of see your point about it being a simple writing style, but it's like you said in your later post; the genius of it comes in the world he has created.

The threads that all weave together and the history and detail that he has come up with is genuinely staggering. He switches viewpoints between characters amazingly well, so you really get a feel for them. You'd probably need to read a few chapters at least to get why it's so good.

One of the things I like about the show is how good the casting is. I guess its because George RR Martin had a big say in a lot of the show apparently.

 

I read all the Game of Thrones books a few years ago (strictly: the Song of Ice and Fire books), and I have been very impressed with how they have translated to the screen. As Nicola's Knife says, it helps an awful lot having the author on the production team. And it's not just the casting which is brilliant, the locations are spot on as well, and the attention to details like the soldiers' uniforms and armour, and so on.

As a story it obviously rivals LOTR for scope and complexity, but one saga I read years ago beats both of them. That is the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series by Tad Williams. The Farseer books by Robin Hobb are also incredibly compelling and well-written. Thoroughly recommended for those who like the fantasy genre, and I would love to see either or both of them filmed.

I've read all of Game of Thrones too. Basically I don't feel it's fantastically written (well it has its moments) but it's great fun and very addictive. I think it translates excellently to the screen. As I've been away on a school trip, I've got some catch to do, yey! Might check out some of your recommendations, as I quite like a fantasy interlude.

 

So I went in to work today to meet everyone, get my staff pass sorted and have a look at my schedule before I start on Monday. There were only about 5 people in the office as others were out in the field. Looking at the video celebrating Saints Twitter gaining 100,000 followers. The girl whose second name Shaw struggled to say was one of them. Glad I'll be working with at least 1 saints fan!

Very few. They've seen a man on CCTV dropping a bag at/near the scene and walking away. That's about it so far.

Edit: Also some are saying "dark-skinned". The Islamophobes are on the edges of their seats.
