I've stumbled across a fair few comments from Pompey fans back from when we were falling down the leagues tonight.

I'm going to post a couple here, and if anyone can remember any - online or something amusing said.... post them here.

One I remember is being on holiday in Gran Canaria in February 2010.

We walk in and put our towels down before dashing off to breakfast. We return and what do we see? A Pompey towel rolled out on the bed next to ours, as he has spotted a Saints bookmark. So for the rest of the holiday, he took great joy in getting digs in and winding us up about how it would take us decades to climb back up the leagues and catch up with them. He said they may have to start looking elsewhere for a derby as there was sod all chance of them ever being in competition with us again.

    How things change!

I quite like hot desserts, so I don't agree with the title of your thread. Revenge is best served cold I believe, but I haven't git the recipe for that.

Not being from the area the rivalry probably isn't as strong for me but I hope the Pompey fans that threatened me and were looking for trouble at Benicassim festival are having a good wallow tonight!

Obviously that guy was biased but he does make some reasonable points. The prem is great for the quality of football but from a suporters experience point of view I don't think it matches up to the lower leagues. That's where the romance of the game remains, still wouldn't swap posistions!

I am actually inclined to agree with the skate. Of course we like to see our team being the best they can be. But i do agree that 'real football' takes place in the lower leagues, and for me there was no greater pride then being the biggest fish in League one knowing that home fans are coming just to see you. I do also miss visiting what i would call proper football grounds, where the fans have a decent bit of banter and it's not all about getting into Europe. I can safely say I have found this season the least enjoyable of the last 4.

Have to agree, the lower leagues was fun, some real good fans & some great fun. But, I wouldn't want to swap Luke Shaw for that, & that's what it would cost. All these players who have grown & developed with us, we couldn't ask them to go on that journey, so we'll have to take a different route, & just make the best of it. ;)

From my experience of division 4 (and 5):

Yes it's still football. We saw some of it last weekend and will see some more last game of the season. Well worth the entry fee :)
=Wake up call on the prices (see below point 2.)

I would assess this more on would you rather pay more to watch a play at the theatre with star names in it? or prefer the Am Dram version. Reality is it is in the £15 - £20 region to watch L2 or Blue Square!!! tenner more to watch Man U!!!!

Not much of it though. Limited amount.

True to a very small extent. Probs true in the away ends but in the home ends the local papers will be given licence to print 'kids for a quid' vouchers to help add to the crowd and kids at football matches can be a good thing......if they actually want to be there. When they are just there cos for a quid they may as well then they are up, down, up, down for food and pop and the crowd sounds like an England crowd for a friendly. All high pitched cheering. Can be very annoying.

    5. WHERE IS FIVE YOU FOOL? IS THERE NO 5 IN PORTSMOUTH SCHOOLING OR AM I MISSING A LOCAL JOKE HERE.

Yep but the pubs then get smashed up. For some games they serve beer with the front doors locked. Others they are open but that can be a bad thing.

Lol. There are quite a few. Funnily enough about the same amount as in the Prem. If England are playing Saturday they will move the game to a Friday. If Sky want to give you your 1 game a season, they will move your game to a Friday. Plus a few of your opponents will get through a couple of rounds in the cups (3 of them remember) and of course most of them will have their grounds permanently closed through November, December & January due to the pitch being frozen/waterlogged/snowed in. Thats great for a fan because you now have 10 rearranged league games to be played and the league will decide they all need to be played in February March..............with your squad of 18 players including loanees having to hobble about on crutches if necessary.

Lol at this. Groundhog day? You mean the scenario that at the end of each season you go down a division? The scenario that at the start of each season you start on -10 points? What's the difference to the 40 point analogy?

Lol again. You haven't seen the lower league crowds. See comment on kids for a quid above. There will be loads of 'pool, Manc & London big club shirts in the ground. Maybe in a few years you'll be seeing Saints shirts every game too :)

I haven't. I've spent 30 years of my life watching at least 1 L2 game a season (let that be all bar 1 year in Div 3 and now 3 seasons in Div 5) For nigh on 10 years I had a season ticket in the 4th tier. See above for my experiences :)

Summary: Much as it was good to see Saints in L1 and the Championship this is competition not religion. The aim is to do well and achieve. EVERY supporter at EVERY club wants that for their own club with no exceptions. They may make remarks about missing this or preferring that but they want to get to the top.

Even if Pompey did start next season on 0 I doubt they would win L2. L2 is won by who gets the best loanees and that is down to luck in the main. It is also down to who is allowed to keep the good loanees for the whole season as some are recalled just when you are looking good for a play off run on the back of 15 unbeaten and all of a sudden you fall without grace losing all but 1 of the last 15 to sink into division 5. L2 is the biggest lottery out there :) So good luck.

EDIT: Funny thing is that in that 30 years I have seen Lincoln promoted twice and relegated thrice :) Lots of 'groundhog day' safety years in there.

Am enjoying PL a bit more now, but have to admit I loved being one of the top dogs in L1 and the Championship...made a change. The difference between us and Pompey though is that we had the facilities and finances...we were a massive club in League 1 and one of the biggest in the Championship. Combined with a good manager we made it to the top. If Pompey fans support their team by going to every match and the manager gets it right, they could enjoy League 2 (better than losing all the time).

It isn't one of greatest threads ever, but you cannot hide what happened in the past and must appreciate that it was a minority of your own fans that have created a lot of hatred of your Club, on another site there was a hint of sympathy, until one of your mongs came on and blitzed it with a load of bile, sympathy simply went clean out of the window, until you rid yourselves of the cancer that is within that is eating out the heart of your team, you will get no sympathy from us or any other Clubs supporters.

There was a large number of your posters (Albeit they were a very small minority of your fans over all) That continually made comments similar and worse during the whole period including on the old BBC 606. Some got very upset when we reminded them of the number of times, up to that point, that Pompey had gone broke themselves over the years.
They were warned then that it could happen to them again the way they were spending. This brought tirades of abuse and caused untold amount of damage between the clubs. Little did they actually know what was just round the corner. In the scheme of things Pompey has been let off light in comparison!
Most of the sensible ones just let things go over their heads.....but as the years went on some chose to keep the kettle boiling so to speak. Some of the old wounds have clearly not healed and probably won't be in the very near future.
PL you are on the Saints Forum you are not going to be welcomed by making comments like that........true or not.
Some one else has already mentioned of the sympathy for Pompey's position, with some moron from Pompey even then determined to stir the ****. So just as some of our memories go back to the good old days with Pompey some only remember the bad............

The thing is, how far do you go with this? The non-leagues are probably even better in that respect - almost certainly have as much banter, and will probably be able to get close to the players, meet them in the pub etc. Real heart of the community stuff. Then a bit further down the pecking order, and you can probably start talkiong about actually playing for the team you support!

So for me, being at the very top is where you at least need to be striving to be. That is the point of the exercise really. Even though being THE best for a prolonged period must in actual fact be rubbish - you must take it for granted as a fan, and most games are formalities, unless you're playing a top four team or CL game. Then again, mid-table obscurity, like Fulham, must be dull as all hell! Villa fans must secretly enjoy the fact (especially in hindsight if they stay up) that the games they have been playing all have so much at stake - life as a Villa fan over the last decade must truly have been one of the dullest football-supporting experiences around. On the whole beat your local rivals, no real epic cup runs to speak of, generally games go to form, and mediocrity is the name of the game.

What Villa have is that their best times are behind them. Saints are lucky in that our history as regards silverware isn't too illustrious, and we have so many new experiences ahead of us to look forward to, plus some real forward momentum, and a journey and plan in our head.
