Toon want to bring ANOTHER Frenchman to St James’ Park.

Newcastle United are set to dip into the French transfer market yet again this summer by making a swoop for Toulouse left-back Cheikh M’Bengue, according to The Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old has apparently been on the Toon’s radar for the past two years now and a move could finally be in the pipeline amid fears over Davide Santon’s future at the club with the young Italian reportedly keen on returning to his native Italy this summer.

A former Arsenal target, M’Bengue is a marauding, powerful full-back who switched allegiances from France, whom he represented at under-21 level, to Senegal in 2011 and he has since gone on to win 10 caps for the Africans.

Not a stranger to controversy, however, he has been banned twice by the French Football Federation (FFF); in 2008 he was handed a 13 game suspension following a dangerous tackle on a Monaco player. Then again in March 2009, in a similar incident against Monaco, he levelled Argentine midfielder Alejandro Alonso, who was ruled out for the remainder of the season. M’Bengue was yellow carded but upon review of the incident the FFF sew fit to suspend him for the rest of the season too.

M’Bengue has featured 29 times for Toulouse this season and is expected to be just one of a number of their stars to head for the exit this summer

Going off on a tangent, but at least the French FA have a pair of bollocks when it comes to dealing with bad tackles - one where he had even been given a yellow card. Our FA would have bottled it before ever doing anything like this. That **** McManaman can thank his lucky stars he doesn't play in France!!

In terms of the player himself, it would be great to get in another quality leftback so that we have competition between Haidara and (potentially) M’Bengue. Even if he doesn't leave (which I hope he doesn't) Santon's future is surely further up the pitch. He's got so much ability going forward it s hard to believe he's been playing as a defender.

The one concern with M’Bengue would be discipline. I've already noticed that quite a few of our foreign imports are keen on throwing in the occasional bad tackles that could well have seen red. We've been lucky so far with the lack of cards but that wont last forever. I'd be a bit concerned if M’Bengue was not made aware that we do not want players getting sent off and suspended. It helps nobody.

    Why a LB though?

I really can't see Pardew being clever enough to realize that Santon is **** defensively, and we also have Haidara. Unless Santon moves on to his preferred destination of AC Milan and Haidara is back, I don't really understand this move.

We have one striker and one back up striker. Neither can score half the time. Please PLEASE make a striker a priority!

Can we play him vs Wigan if we both stay up?

I thought Arsenal + Spuds were both looking at him again - or is that just the usual lazy journos linking every team with every player they run a feature on, just in case one day they get something right?

If he's coming it'll be good. Since we know the FA is hopeless at dealing with dangerous tackles. Having had a fair share on the receiving end, it's time we dole out some punishment.
