you cant see the difference watching those games in black and white for the simple reason they were the same standard with two or three that stand out like john charles and others. its the same today's football where we have the superstars who are a class above, but you can clearly see the difference in skill and pace of the two era's......I remember when if they had to play extra time that nearly all the team would roll their socks down and looked knackered and today its rarely seen and they still have plenty of energy left.....its like today they are premiership class and back then championship class. they were fantastic in their day but would struggle if we could turn the clock back and play man utd of today against the man utd of the time we are talking about.....Im not disputing that they were not the superstars of soccer then as they clearly was .....but todays superstars have more about them due to progress...
Agree. Its the same debate when people compare the 70s era rugby greats compared to the current successful winning Grand Slam sides. Okay, the 70s players may have been more skillful, but today's players would far to powerful, fast and fitter than the 70s sides and they would get battered as the wouldn't be able to handle the speed, power and higher intensity over the 80 minutes against today's side.
exactly valley and thats my point....they were great though and im so lucky to watch football from the days of the leather ball right up to the present day...every era has been a pleasure to watch.....one thing that the old players did have was guts and were hard as nails. some of the tackles then that you cant do today was bone crunching but they would get up and carry on hoping to get the player back..... there was some cracking punch ups on the field in them days......arrrrd as nails i tell u ...by gum arrrd as nails they were....
Earlier on no footballers from bygone eras were good enough, now John Charles and a few others are, Dai? Who are the others then?
Bob Latchford is in; http://www.theswanseaway.co.uk/2013/04/all-time-swansea-xi-centre-forward-bob.html
only if you go ny names of being great in their era i would pick them......but as for john charles then he never played for swansea town at any time so he is out for a start...
he was a schoolboy and did not play any games for the swans or the swans reserves, he played for cardiff though....
